Using 2WIRE DSL/ROUTER and RCA cable modem

Hi, I used to have internet connection through QWEST. Now I have Internet connection through Mediacom, which is cable internet. I use a modem called RCA DCM425 as of now. I am aware that this modem is not Wi-Fi, and 2WIRE is. After investigating a lot on the Internet I found out that it is possible to use the 2wire along with the cable modem to provide Wi-Fi. I managed to setup the router once and managed to get on 192.168.0.1, but then it is not allowing me anymore. I wondered where I went wrong, I have the cable modem connected to the router, and have the router connected to the computer. I don’t know if I have a static or dymanic ip address, how do I figure that out, and when I have tried pinging 192.168.0.1 it says request timed out. I have copied what I got from the command prompt below and have x out the physical address of my computer.

Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

Make sure that the router and pc is setup to find the IP automatically. Restore the defaults to the router then try to reconnect to the router. It should come up when you type in the default address if you don’t know the default to the router look up the model and see what it is, sometimes its not the IP that you listed. If you can connect to the router have it set to find IP automatically and that should show the modem address if you cannot connect to the modem, get a crossover cable and hook it between the modem and router try again. if you still cannot connect post the results again then we will try another approach. Hope this helps :-)

Well looking at your config, you are not going to be able to connect to it, because it looks as if it is in “bridge mode”, speaking that your IP is a public IP, not a private IP. Does the router have a reset button on it? If so, hold it for 10 secons, or what ever it needs to reset.

Also for future reference, for you to be able to connect to it, you would have to be on the same subnet as it, for example if the routers IP was 192.168.0.1, with a /24 subnet, then your pc would have to have a 192.168.0.x IP, with a /24 subnet, and its default gateway set to 192.168.0.1. If after you reset it, if you still cant get back to the router screen by using its IP, then disconnect the cable modem from the router, plug you pc into the router, and manually set your ip to 192.168.0.10, with a 255.255.255.0 subnet, and 192.168.0.1 as the gateway, then try getting back to the router.
