I got a legal complaint for “Monies Due: Motor Vehicle Lease” from this law firm.

I don’t know what to do about this? What are the first steps I need to take? Thanks a lot for your time and guidance.

Most companies will send a law firm after you first if you owe them money. You might get a summons to appear in court, if you do, go! Becuase if you owe money to a company, they can garnish your wages and basically ruin your credit. So if your not good with this kind of stuff, seek legal advice! This happened to me, but it was for property damage. I didn’t do the damage, but I was on the lease. Yep. Best thing to do as a first step, get in touch with the firm that’s prosecuting you, find out what the heck they want, then get a lawyer.

These issues should be handled carefully. Like in a game of poker, don’t let the other players know what your cards are. The same is true here, I would suggest you don’t go to talk to the other law firm, as you may or may not let them know information that they were initially seeking to solidify their case.

I would be suprised if that letter didn’t also give you an amount of time to respond back to the court if you disagree with any of the claims being filed against you, offering an opportunity to supply documentation or other factual information.

Overall, I am still not sure if this is a summons or a notice that you were given. If you are required to appear before the court to settle this matter, it is a summons. However, if it simply states the complaint and offers an opportunity to resolve it out of court, then you have been given a notice.

The two are entirely different and would be handled completely different from either one.

If it is a summons get the lawyer. If not, then maybe see how much you owe and pay it off.
