I have a similar problem, but since I started using DTA One Click (an add on for Firefox) it has been a lot better. It doesnt always work, but it does a fair bit.

try Get Right (getright.com), well, it doesn’t continue downloading when the connection is down, obviously, but it can continue the downloads once the connection is up, sometimes even when the server doesn’t support download pause-resume.

What type of ISP do you use? Dial-up, cable, DSL? Do you use a wireless connection, for example to connect a laptop to your internet connection? There may be ways to improve your connectivity, depending on your connection.

GetRight has a good reputation, but there are free alternatives as well. If you use Firefox, try looking for download manger add-ons. I like to use FlashGet with FlashGot to integrate it with the browser. FlashGot also works with GetRight to make it easier to use in Firefox.

In general, Firefox makes it easier to add a download manager that suits your taste, and it is available for most operating systems.
