do people have conversations with themselves?

im having trouble waking up in the morning and doing any kind of work. I dont seem to be motivated to do anything. no energy or desire at all and im only 24. i fear that something is wrong but i dont want my fear to become a reality. why cant i just be motivated like other people and finish simple tasks?

When a person realizes things or simply thinks…yes. It is called Intrapersonal communication.

i’m not sure i wanted other people to know about this, but yes, sometimes i do like talk to myself, like when i’m on the shower and before sleeping and stuff. well, i just figure that some people sing in the shower, while some others talk with themselves… perhaps?.
and as for motivation and finishing simple tasks, think about the outcome, like what are you getting out of it, that’s what motivates me.

OK, while we are admitting this…
When i have issues, I will talk to myself.
You kind of seperate your mind into two, you ask the questions that are bothering you, then the other part of you, reassures you and gievs intelligent answers!

Hi — when I talk to other people a lot I forget about myself and my needs so much that I end up really suffering, so then I try to consciously think out in words (in writing at least) stuff about my own personal life. I think that is similar. Like people have blogs and keep journals.

Sometimes depression can creep into your life for no apparent reason. This might account for your lack of motivation. Yes, nothing wrong with having an occasional covo with yourself either. I do it, lol…

This may not seem so relevant, but it kind of is (I just saw it on another page):

“Recite a mantra
A mantra literally means “that which protects the mind.” So reciting a mantra protects you with spiritual power. It is also said that when you chant a mantra, you are charging your breath and energy with the energy of the mantra.”

Some people talk to themselves ceaselessly like that.

Also… if you are Larry David, dont lend your Mantra to Richard Lewis, because he won’t want to give it back when you need it ;)

Who are larry david and richard lewis?

Do they know how to get back into a stated of energized motivation capable of accomplishing simple and complex tasks?

doesn’t hurt to ask

Sorry it a reference to ‘curb your enthusiasm’!
I was hoping someone would pick up on it!

So they must know something. Enthusiasm is related to motivation somehow.

hi too. well, for me at least, it wasn’t like ‘thinking out loud’, it was more like literally a conversation, like i imagined several “scenarios” of what the response would be like then just keep on conversing… i sounded crazier huh?

It makes some sense to think (even perhaps aloud) in conversations, living in such a conversational world. As far as I know people do tend to do that more in states of “craziness” (like a lot of stress), because the inner dialogue or conversation isn’t all that important in life lots of times — more normal conditions you can just be interacting with people, working on something, feeding hungers, exercising, etc, and whatever inner conversation is going on (if any) isn’t the main focus.

hm. The motivation issue seems more important. I do know that there are many people on the web saying fine things about goals and life-purpose and stuff, but it’s kind of luck-of-the-draw to go off on a web search.

Wow!

Thanks everyone for all the feedback- the funny thing is that I started with the subject of self talk then had to take care of something else, away from the comp (my A.D.D. kicked in). Then i came back and just started typing about lack of motivation because i’ m having trouble with that too!

but my concern is how to get up in the morning. what kind of things do people say to themselves to physically get out of bed? Is it prayer? Responsibility? Excitement? Love of a Job? How do you self talk into getting up in the am?
