This is not one of my Random Video posts, this is something that nearly made me pee myself because it’s simply that cool.
Watch, and be amazed.

God one Xeno, downloading the software now :D
I love the TED Talks. I was afraid that this one wouldn’t be on Youtube but it was! Huzzah!
Reality is awesome.
thanks to to dougie, I missed the download link. I watched this when I first came out on ted and all my geek friends were going “can’t wait”. Well, waiting over.
**** you, ms windows installer 3.1
If it was google it would have just worked…
I don’t have the sys’ req’s to download the software. Guess I’ll just have to watch the videos. :|
Well I use vista on one of my computers. Might even be tempted to download it. When I have more time to use it.

Works on XP
When WWT launched, it quickly earned a place in my awesome online and free planetarium apps folder, along with -
Celestia - www.shatters.net/celestia
Asynx - www.asynx-planetarium.com
Stellarium - www.stellarium.org/
Neave - http://www.neave.com/planetarium/
WinStars2 - http://www.winstars.net/english/
This site offers very good demonstrations of scale of the known universe - http://www.atlasoftheuniverse.com/
Honorable mention: Galaxy Zoo - http://www.galaxyzoo.org/
Those that joined early helped astronomers prove the value of a “distributed classification” technique by quickly categorizing thousands of photographs. Now, they’ve launched GalazyZoo2 with a 3rd program on the drawing board.
Looks interesting I will give it a try, I used Celestia before hopefully this will be even better :)

You know, I was thinking the same thing! It rocks.
Except… Google Earth has pictures of people buying drugs and stuff if you look closely enough.
I doubt we’ll see alien pot deals going on if you examine this for long enough, lol.
Although alien pot… not that’s some good sh*t.

Can’t you use google earth to do Sky View…?
Can’t get the hang of that aspect myself. But you can!
And thanks for reminding me to install the software. Windows wnated to update something first, and then restart computer.
Now I shall install and enjoy. Unless the computer wants me to restart it AGAIN!
Sheeesh!
Hmmm, My bad, I thought I posted Google Sky on that list. My bad -
http://www.google.com/sky/
Far as I can recall, GoogSky lacks WWT’s dynamic interactive option. That is, GoogSky relies on static displays/perspectives, and WWT allows you to virtually travel from one part of the universe to another as if you were piloting a spacecraft.
Xeno, thanks for reminding me about WWT because my version was 8.1x something and it’s downloading 8.8x. Seems like I spend half of every day downloading updates and new versions of software, a lot different than the old days when a PC harddrive could only hold Wordstar, Visicalc and about 4 drivers. :-)
Actually, for a MSFT product, things just went surprisingly smoothly. About 2 mins to download, 10 seconds to install directly over the old version, and all seems to working fine. (knock on wood) The big question… will my PC hang when I try to reboot? :-)

so this is like Google Earth, except in space and more epic of a win?
Like google earth content, but that’s all. It’s MS ugliness all over. The download, dotnet, the awkward interface, the system hangs. Its worth it, but its like Irene Au was working on the inside sabotaging efforts.
