writing help: I need to write an essay for The Great Gatsby that completes the following fragment: - Help.com

I need to write an essay for The Great Gatsby that completes the following fragment:

“Gatsby is…”

However, I’m finding it difficult to decide what to use. It cannot be something specific, rather something opinionated, such as “Gatsby is a sinister gangster,” “Gatsby is classic romantic,” or “Gatsby is a pathological narcissist,” and something that I could obviously explicate using quotes and events from the novel, and perhaps historical events as well.

What could follow “Gatsby is…” and what instances in the book or historical references would I be able to apply to support the idea?

Thank you for your help.

Gatsby is a victim of his culture.

talk about the culture of the 1920’s
-bootlegging

discuss the corruption of the midwestern ideals

-discuss how he dedicated his life to the accumulation of wealth to accommodate Daisy (greedy *****)

-the downfall of Gatsby.

you get the basic idea
Good luck!

Thank you very much!

I apologize for not clarifying this in my question, but my thesis needs to be a direct description of Gatsby. For example, “Gatsby is a misunderstood romantic” or something of that nature. Generally speaking, it would need to be “Gatsby is a [noun]” or “Gatsby is a(n) [adjective] noun.” I could absolutely elaborate on the example you provided, but how do you think I should go about rephrasing it?

Something perhaps like, “Gatsby is a troubled, naive romantic”?

that sounds good

I’m unfamiliar to this essay structure so I don’t know exactly what your teacher is looking for.

you could check sparknotes for ideas… they have very good character analysis on their website… that could lead you in the right direction
