I would like to dye my blonde hair dark brown.
My hair right now is like a champaign blonde. I want to do something different and dye my hair to a dark, chestnut brown. If I don’t like it, could I easily change it back? Also, would it be ok to dye it at home from a box?

Where were you?
You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen
You should try one of those harmless mouse dyes that soften your hair, look great, and only stay in for 30 days to see if you really like it.

It depends.
Is the blonde color your natural color or a dyed color?
If the blonde isn’t your natural color, you’re going to need to tone and bleach your hair before you can even dye it brown. Otherwise, your hair will come out sort of ‘gray’ish. If this is your situation, I’d definitely get professional help.
If the blonde is your natural color and you’re just looking to simply dye your color darker, it will be easier. Just apply the color and there you have it.
Either way, if you decide you eventually want to go back to blonde ..it’s not going to be easy. With that, you’re probably going to need salon help too, or be prepared to have a lot of ‘trial and error’.
I was blonde two weeks ago but went to the salon and dyed my hair brown. I didnt regret it but i do miss my blonde hair. If you try and change your hair back from a very dark brown to a very light blonde you will end up orange probably. So either go lighter in stages like..dark brown, then medium brown , then lightbrown, then dark blonde and then medium ect. But i have found that the brown dye has been washing out and fading each time i wash my hair so i figured that if i washed it enough i might go medium blonde and be able to dye it. but try it brown anyway cause you feel different.
I have done everthing to my hair you can do . If you go a shade darker and use a small botlle of Sally’s hair infusion for 2.99 your hair dye will stay fresh longer. Most real blonde’s don’t need to worry as thier hair always goes back to it’s real color naturally.
And yes it is safe to use home products as well. and cheaper as well.
Try Clariol Products .
I use them and the cheaper the better and they all work well.
Best hair dye I’ve ever used was Ion, from Sally’s.
But it’s best to see what type of hair she has first ..because if it is already died, she needs to be careful how she dyes it. It could easily turn gray.
I dyed my mom’s hair from dark brown to streaked with red and blonde, and we just used Revlon and it worked quite well, and she says her hair feels really soft and good. ;)
I just dyed my hair dark brown today, and I had very light blonde hair. I used the garnier stuff (is that how u spell it?) and my hair came out just like it looks on the box.
i dyed my hair brown today and it was brown. as long as you use temporary it will be fine. and then if you like in ye it the same color permanently. brown hair is more sophisticated, good luck.
i went blonde when i was 17 went to go back to brown got a home dye BIG mastake it went a kahki green went to a salon was told i should have dyed it red first the end resault was a lott better than my first attempt. good luck
i need help too ..
OMG !! .. i dont want it to go Red thats alll !
I am only 12 and have dyed my hair about three times. My hair is naturally dirty blond but i have dyed my hair a little blonder each time. My hair now is a light blond, but not to light. i am scared i am going to ruin my hair by dying it to many times so i decided to go to a light brown……..what color will it turn out to be!!! Help!!! im dying my hair tonight…..i need to know what color!!!
thanx alot…..nikki
I dye my hair myself anymore, every month. I used to go to a salon when I wanted highlights and lowlights, but otherwise I just do it at home now. I did go to another beautician after my normal one shut down and she made me look like an orange leopard. It was horrible, plus 10x more expensive. My hair is naturally a light to medium brown with hints of light red in it when sunlight and certain indoor lights hit it. I went light to medium blonde with lighter blonde highlights, with reddish brown lowlights. I go back and forth from medium to dark blonde all the way back to light to medium brown by myself, at home. I have been using Clairol, Nice’n Easy, because it has 3x highlights into the color and looks professional also. As long as you pay attention of what it says on the box about the color you should be fine. I’ll get to the point, the reason people usually get a greenish or gray color when they dye their hair is because they’ve used an “Ash” when they didn’t need to. Just remember, if you want to minimize the golden or red tones, then choose a color with “Ash” in it. If you want to add Golden or Red tones to your hair, then choose color that says golden, reddish, or warm in it. If you want to bring out the natural effects of your hair, choose a neutral or natural color; it has soft beige tones that neutralize and bring out the natural colors in your hair. Check for that on the boxes and you should be doing ok. And remember; if you don’t like it; it’s not like you have to keep it a lifetime. I’m actually dying my hair in just a few minutes from a dark blonde with strawberry highlights to a medium brown. So, just read all the info about the colors, pick one, and just do it. That’s why they make hats; if you hate it that much, lol. Anyways, hope all that rambling helped you out.
Hey, Me again, lol. I forgot to mention that I did actually switch this time for Clariol’s Nice’n Easy Colorolgy to Clariol’s Nice’n Easy-Perfect 10. I had a friend that used it and her hair looked great and very healthy weeks afterwards. And I had been hearing very good things about throughout magazines, hair magazines, and etc.. So, I thought I would give it a try. Waiting right now to rinse. The great thing is that is really does only take 10 minutes. :-)
so i am really blonde and want to dye my hair brown!!
BUT, i did it last time and it had a green tinge to it.. i dont want it to have a greentinge this time.. what do i have to do for it not to go the green tinge way?
I heard a red rinse will help??
my hair is blonde with brown in it i would like to color it a dark color would it be safe to do it at home.
my hair is dry and a little burned what products do u recommend i use to make my hair healthy again
It would be far better to make a new post instead of randomly blabbing on a five month old post.
Hmm I’ve been reading all these comments and they are great.
I’m kida having the same problem.
At the moment I’ve got a ugly warm light brown (which sort of looks orange) with half head of blonde foils, and I hate it, besides it’s damaging and expensive to maintain.
So I want to go and purchase home hair dye to cover it all. I was think a chestnut brown or even medium-dark brown. After reading most if not all of the comments I gather that I cannot do this at home and that I should see a proffessional.
Does everyone else agree?
Please help.

i recently went to the salon and got rid of my blonde highlights, they put a toner in it which went red, then dyed it dark brown over it. i love my hair now cos it’s pretty dark. one thing is that i had blonde hair extensions and now they obviously can’t be used. just wondering if anyone knows how to dye blonde extensions dark brown? they’re 100% human hair also.
thanks
ive had platinum blonde hair (highlighted) for the past 6 years, and dyed it dark brown-with a box of revlon, a month ago. The color came out fine, it wasn’t grey, green, any color as mentioned above. It faded in 3 weeks. If your hair has been highlighted/bleached it doesn’t hold color very well, so if you get a semi-permanent color, don’t worry about it not returning to blonde. I also have hair extensions, they are good quality real human hair, I dyed them dark brown with the same box dye and they match perfectly. the only problem is, they hold the color better and don’t fade as quickly as my real hair, and you do have to make sure when you are dying them to leave the dye on longer than you would on your real hair, or the pigment will be lighter and uneven
asdfasdf
I **** my pants. Somebody help.
I said i shiittt my pants. brown long turds are falling out of the pants by my shoes. what the ffucck am i gunna doooooo????????????????????????????
i have bleached blonde hair, and i want to dye it dark brown.i got a piece of my hair tested proply to sea if it would work and it looked great eccept it had some green in,and i realy want to dye my hair dark brown, and people say if you just go buy a random bright red dye then go over in ddark brown then it wil work..
is this true
x
thats what i’ve been reading aswell. I got my hair dyed blonde, on top & brown underneath few months ago now. and i’m going to go & buy a box of red & dark brown from the shop 2day to dye it back brown. Hope it works. Maybe get a piece of ur hair & dye it the red first then wait & dye it wit the brown afterwards, and see what colour it turns out, if safe then dye all ur hair with the colours. But remember to try & get the strongest blonde piece of hair to test first too see what colour it changes.. good luck :-)
Thanks for all the posts, they really do help.
DONT DO IT!! thats exactly what i wanted and i used a semi permanent color. my hair was light blonde with natural highlights and low lights in it. i dyed it all a dark shade of brown a little more than 2 months ago and it is practically the same. it was great and different for a few weeks but when ur ready to go back to ur natural hair color it is practically impossible. it sucks. so just a warning. its probably something u dont want to do.
My hair is a natural black but a while back I did blond highlights with brown. But I want to go back to my natural hair color (black) and my roots are come out about 2 to 3 inches. Could I get Feria from Loreal and just get a dark black to cover the hightlights?
can anyone tell me if they had blonde hair oh wait… i mean REALLY blonde hair and they died it reddish brownish and it was ugly on them? cuz i want to die my natural blonde hair reddish brownish and im worried it is gunna be ugly on me. and im also only 10 yrs old so will it dammage my hair? someone plz help!
10 year olds should not be dying their hair and if you do u need an adult to help you or u can bet its not gonna come out right. its not as simple as it seems whether ur doing it out of a box or not
hi, i had bleached blonde hair done at the hairdressers for about 4 years and recently had it dyed brown. I miss my blonde hair so much and want to go back blonde but im not sure if i can without damaging it?? Please could anyone tell me?? Thankyou x
I am a light blond, which is gradually turning brown. I have organised for my hair to be dyed brown. A dark brown the same olour as Kristen Stewarts of Twilight. i don’t know if it would suit me, so can people please tell me whether they have duied there hair from blond to brown, and whether it looked nice, or didn’t suit them and it was too big a change.
thanks
i’ve got salon highlihted hair and my roots are growing out a really nasty brown and i wanna dye my whole hair brown but if i do it at home i’ve been told that it will go ginger and i really dont want that. My mum says i should get it stripped back at the salon to my natural colour first then get it dyed brown professionally instead. But i obv have to pay for myself and thats quite expensive. I’m also worried that it wont look nice all my mates think it will and so do i but i guess you cant be sure has anyone dyed it and really regreted it?????? PLEASE COMMENT ND HELP ME FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO????
LUV…..catyyy!!!!! 3
Hi,
I have been doing a lot of online research…I had chemically highlighted blonde hair and wanted a warm rich dark brown colour….everyone warned me off doing this at home but I knew I could do it myself as long as I knew what I was doing. Basically the first colour I put on my hair was a rich reddy brown colour, I used a permanant dye by clairol I put it on for 8 minutes (the box said 10) it turned my hair a kind of orangy/red colour, without conditioning I rinsed it out and dried it then immediately applied a dark golden brown colour, leaving this on for about 9 minutes (it again said 10 on the box) I made sure the dye was evenly spread and all my hair was saturated, and it has turned out perfect, I do not think a salon could have done better, its a warm rich colour and does not look at all like I have done it at home. I am very pleased and have saved myself a fortune!

Hi, i have always had blonde hair, even from a kid and in october i decided to go brown, dark brown. i was nervous about what it would look like if i went completely dark so i had a couple of blonde chunks put in it to break it up a bit. It looked lovely when the hairdresser finished. To start with she dyed my hair orange and then brown, it has now faded and looks ginger in some lights, can i use a DIY kit to dye over the brown as i’ve already had the base colour on when i had it done at the salon? I want to leave the blonde but the brown needs to be darker! heelllppp!
Helpppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp i have dark brown hair and want it blonde with brown highlights, can i dye it blonde myself ?

hey, ive got natural dark blonde hair, & ive been to the hair dressers twice to have blonde highlights put in, but ive done blonde highlights at home once because my roots were coming through, (got my mum to do it) but it didn’t do the bottom of my hair, so this weekend im going to buy a dye, do the blonde boxed dye actually work ? or do they go yellow..etc ? or shall i just go a light brown ? (when i had my highlights done at home they looked yellow, but kind of changed & just blended in with the colour i had before) HELP ME PLEASE ! :)
can someone help me please :(
i dye my hair so much i really think i have promblems and i need to stop tbh, right so i had brown hair but i wanted to go blonde BAD IDEA it went as like as bright as the sun :( and then i put a brown on and its like a grey ish green purple colour i want it light brown but dont wanna keep dyin it “/ if i keeps washin it what will it do ?
I am a hairdresser.. so if u want to dye your hair from light blonde to a light brown.. u wont have to use a red filler. however.. if u want dark brown-medium brown.. use eitha a golden blonde/brown filler first (semi’s r good fillers) leave that on for about 15-20mins.. and then put the dark brown over..that way u wont end up with the green tinge or faded ends. Be sure if u use a red filler - that its not to intense or not to dark eitha.
i dyed my natural black hair blonde and now the black roots are coming out…it luks kinda ugly..haha how do i turn them to a dark colur??? will they use bleach in my hair if i wanna go darker ??/ cant dey just tone my hair to a darker shade??

I’m naturally a blonde with lowlights mixed, all natural. I want to try something new (darker) and I’ve NEVER died my hair before. I’m thinking either a Dirty Blonde from L’OREAL, and see what differance it makes in my hair. Maybe it will be a little darker or maybe it won’t be noticable, but I don’t want it to be a waste then. Or I was thinking the Light Brown from L’OREAL Healthy Look No Ammonia that washes out after 28 shampoos. I don’t know if that will be too dark for me. Everyone says it would bring out my green/blue eyes, but I’m very worried I’m going to have a meltdown if I don’t like it and on top of that, worry about if it will come out green?
I don’t care which is better for my hair health wise, I definetly want to color it..I need advice!!
Thanks a million!!
I’ve had dyed blonde hair for 5 years, and finally went dark again, using dark golden brown by perfect 10, my hair instantly looks healthier, and my blue eyes pop. I know I’ll miss being a blonde sometimes, but at least with my eye colour, I’ll still look exotic. I just hope my Jamaican boyfriend likes it, lol…..I highly recommend this product. It works fast too……
naturally i’m a horrible blonde so for years i have been dying it blonde. i went to the hair dressers today to test my hair to see if it they could bleach it. they tested my hair and it was arful it ruined my hair so they suggested i should grow it out. But as my hair is not naturally very blonde i have really bad routes. so i am wanting to go dark brown and not dye my hair for a year untill all the dyes have come out and i can bleach it. GO TO THE HAIR DRESSERS its okay when its already been dyed you can use a box for the same colour but if you want to change the coulour to a new one i would ask the advice of hair dressers. It only costs me £40 for my hair to have full head colour, blow, cut and dry :) x
I had dirty blonde hair, and dyed it non permenant red, then permenant dark brown, was wondering what would be the best way to go back blonde? x
hey i coloured my hair black because my white roots were showing and everytime i tried colouring my hair blonde it always went bright orange!can someone tell me wat to do
My uncle is a cosmetologist & yesterday he dyed my unnatural blonde/brown hair to medium ash brown tint. it turned some of my old blonde highlights to a grey color. i recommend that you do not do this at home if you are not naturally blonde because, your hair will not turn out as you expected. just a tip!
I dont know my hair is a natural light blonde and idk if i should go light brown or not… Ive never dyed it b4!!
Hey I’m blonde and imma dye it a reddish auburn or like a red brown an I don’t know if it would look good or not. Please help!!! Oh and im almost 15. Help!

i agree if you want to go back blonde never use boxes they just dont have the strength salon dyes have. trust me i used to do hairdressing in college. if you ever want to go dark from light blonde, always use something with natural tones not ash or it will go green, not golden or it tends to go orange. something with a slight red tone like chestnut. you shouldn’t go far wrong. im dying mine from a box from salon highlighted hair next week. hope all ive said doesn’t come back and bite me in the butt lol ;)
My hair is blonde and I really want to dye it like a medium golden brown - will that be ok???
Help help !! I have (had dark brown hair) tried dying it light blonde, went orange !! :/ bought a dark brown hair colour to put over the top, that covered the orange for a few weeks, now it has gone orange again. I loved my hair it was a darke brown with beautiful blonde streaks, and now it is orange, I can’t just keep dying it brown again, because the colour will just fade and go back to orange. what to do ?? I just want my hair back. !! EMERGENCY !!!!
Ur hair will not be gray if u put a dark brown over a dyed blonde unless it has a ash in it! If you don’t like it … It’s not soo easy to go back blonde not to mention it will severely damage u hair try on a wig of brown hair in a shop to see what u would wanna go with and how it looks

Yes, i dont know anybody that dosnt die it from home. All of my friends look really awesome with their hair color. Just follow the steps on the box. And if you need u can have help from friends!!!
Hello, I have a dirty blonde hair with light blonde hair, what will happen if I dye it a darkish/lightish brown? I need to know before I dye it?;) thankyou..x
You most definatley do not have to bleach you’re hair to go darker! Depending on how blonde you are.. When you colour blonde with dark you need to ‘pre pig’ you’re hair.. This is what we would do in a salon! However just make sure the dark you choose has a warm tone to it.. Such as ‘mahogany brown’ or ‘warm brown’ other than ‘natural brown’ the warmth of the colour stops the hair going a carky grey colour xx
I have long, naturally dark blonde/brown, wavy hair. When I was under the age of 14, it was very light blonde then gradually got darker. I had my mom bleach it with Feria Beige/Beach Blonde, for about 6 years now. I just had a baby and her hair is my natural color. Which is a brown with reddish highlights. I want to go back to my original color so that my daughter and I will have the same haircolor.
I cannot afford a professional. We are on a VERY tight budget. Are their any products at SALLY’S that I can buy to fill in the pores in my bleached blonde hair and then allow it to evenly absorb the brown and dark red tones instead of the ash gray ends with red roots that I have experienced in the past when trying to darkin my hair.
My mom is really good at dying my hair. She has been dying my sister’s hers’ and mine forever. She just needs to know what products to buy.
If there is anyone out there who can help me, I would really appreciate it. I feel so ugly after childbirth. Just wear my hair pulled up in a ponytail with dark roots all the time. I want to look pretty for my husband and for myself especially.
