Had the same problem on my 2002 Ford Taurus which is the same car.
The first time, Ford replaced the ignition coil, spark plug and wires. Well, this worked for a few weeks and then the problem came back. Then the diagnosis was either a bad valve of crack in the cylinder head. In my situation, they magnafluxed the cylinder head and it was okay, but one of the valves had to be replaced.
Hope this helps.
