depressed about new business…

we bought a dvd store in october & it was going really well the first month. now, the second month, it’s really bad. so bad that we can’t pay the bills. we decided to expand the store beyond dvds to attract more customers, but we don’t have the little money for our plan though it would help immensely. we’re stuck in a hard place right now. it’s just really slow… every idea is a dead end…

Do you think that all the DVD stores in your area are having trouble, or is your store having a particular problem?

What are the expenses for your business? Can you negotiate to reduce or delay any of them? If you rent your space, you can try to negotiate with your landlord for a rent vacation for a month if you can convince them that it could help. Of course nobody wants to give up income, but if there aren’t any other renters available they might be willing to try to keep you afloat so that you can pay more rent in the future.

Lenders are pretty tight on money right now, but you could consider courting a direct investor if you think that expanding your business would make a difference. Most metropolitan areas have magazines targeted at small business owners, and you might be able to cull the names of some candidates from those publications. Acquiring or selling to a rival might also be an option for you. Sometiems one business with two locations can do better than two competing businesses.

DVD store probably wasn’t the best business decision. Entertainment is the first thing to go in a down economy. And when this recession is over more and more people will be downloading their entertainment instead of buying it from a real store like yours.

Simply look at the beating movie rental places are taking; you see them closing every ware.

Maybe what you should do is get out of the DVD business and do something else in the space you how now.

Are you incorperated? If so you may want to file for bankrupcy and reorganize.

Try running a promotion to help bring in more customers. Also, you need to call the previous owner to help, and ask what worked best for them.
