college help: I am a new Christian…I need to make a decision about if I should stay out of college for a year or continue. - Help.com

I am a new Christian…

I need to make a decision about if I should stay out of college for a year or continue. I pray, but I don’t know what God’s answer is. Help, I need to know the answer like today cuz we got to pre-register for next semester today. How can I know the answer?

school isn’t for everyone, but I will remind you of this - in most cases the kind of jobs that you will be qualified for without an education degree or training certificate will be a lot tougher and a lot longer than college is for you now. College is a means to end, if it doesn’t offer an education in what you are interested i, then finish so you have the degree or find a training program that will give you the skills you need for what you are interested in.

most people I know that dropped out for a semester or a year never went back, because they took on new responsibilities that made it too hard to go back.

It really depends on what you want to do for work on the future and if you have the means and the skills.

whatever you decide, I wish you well

I am not actually interested in my major…I don’t even think I fit for it…but do you think I should just finish to get the degree?

quote from a movie called fight club

We’ve all been raised on television to believe that one day we’d all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars, but we won’t. We’re slowly learning that fact. And we’re very, very pissed off.

okay. so then a few things come to mind…

do you have access to a student adviser? If yes, get an appointment ASAP to see if you can leverage any of the work you have done so far, either as a minor or a concentration and also to ensure that you wont be unduly penalized if you do switch

have you done your “homework” on the possible new major, such that you feel somewhat confident that it really does interest you enough to see it through?

do you have the support of your family, at least emotionally and ideally financially to pursue whatever you want, or if there is financial support is it only for an education?

Career’s in entertainment are difficult but not impossible, you will need natural beauty to be a model and natural talent plus a lot of training to be a singer, and you may do and be all of that and make your living but not be famous. Do you love to do those things for the sake of doing them or for the fame and possible fortune you think you will get? Either way, its always much nicer to have options, so I say choose a major you like, are interested in and feel you can handle, meanwhile work on your crafts and you get the best of both…

it isnt wrong to make a wrong decision if you think about it , it’s really even better than making the right decision cause you learn from it… dont be afraid think about it and see what comes out , only you know the answer for the question…

My family does support me pursuing an education…but when it comes to entertainment (If I decide to do that) I think I will have to support myself. I do have natural beauty, and people have told me I look like a model. But I don’t know I do not want to be shallow.Maybe I should just let that be a dream :-)

I think a student adviser could really help you a lot. 3 years for a new major probably seems like a lifetime to you right now but it sounds to me like all of your dreams are possible and you can work on some of them at the same time - 3 years is a small price to pay for a real lifetime of options and opportunities to shape the life you desire. That way, if you are able to manifest a career in entertainment, awesome - if not, you’ll have something good to fall back on

One other thing, I didn’t address before, the work life is not the same as college life, if you do choose to leave then you most likely are also giving up all the social opportunities college can provide and honestly the break before you truly become responsible solely for yourself. Work is almost never easier or less time consuming than school.

Look around your life, examine what life is life for different people around you based on their education and work - concentrate on people 10 - 30 years older than you. I know very few people who regret finishing college and many people who regret dropping out.

Everyone’s path is different though, and I believe you will find your way. Good luck!

I suggest that you keep up your “academic momentum,” because if you take a year off, you could find yourself distracted or working at a job that would not allow you to easily return. You would be tempted to buy things and you would have bills to pay off. Stay in college and adjust your major if you have to. I recommend a degree even if you’re going to be a supermodel. The actress and model, Brooke Shields, went back to college and got her degree . . . and she probably didn’t have to. By all means, pursue your dreams . . . but always have a “Plan B” to fall back on!

Sometimes God really does leave the decision up to us, sometimes He does not.

I would suggest that you pray more. Wait. If you do not seem to get an answer I would ask an aged person whom you greatly respect their advice and go with that.

Honestly I would say finish your education. Education like faith is something that no one can take away from you. What are you studying?

No education is ever a waste. I say keep on studying. You may never get another chance. If God wants the doors closed on your studies, He’ll make it happen.
