school help: I can’t focus on homework. - Help.com

I can’t focus on homework.

When in class I can easily pay attention to lectures - even boring ones - if I am doing something with my hands like drawing, or weaving. However, at home, I can’t seem to focus on my homework at all. I constantly get distracted and can’t finish my work. I’m 19 and just starting college, and it has affected my grades terribly. In high school it was okay because high school is pretty much free, but this is money we’re talking here! Everyone says I’m just lazy and a procrastinator, that I need more self-control, but I don’t know how to get that way. I’ve always had this problem.

Does anyone have any tips to help me focus? Homework is important!

same here. with many things besides homework too. maybe you need a study partner or partners. when you’re alone it might be too easy for your mind to wander. if you have someone there who is also studying it might be easier to do your thing too. :)

go into your room, turn off everything, put your dresser in front of the door, andsee if that helps.

I have the same problem and i am a senior in high school and i know it will affect me next year in college.
I think what people like you and i have to do is first force ourselves to do these things.

Literally force yourself, anyway you can to do it. Then after time you will not have to force yourself as much.

Its hard to break habit but the first step in doing it is to get tough on yourself and try your hardest to just do it.

music, food, headphones, shut everything out and open up all your resources so everywhere you look on your computer you see your work, and work slowly.

works for me :D

honestly calling people like us lazy does not help at all.
i completely 100% understand how you feel. i’m a junior and really want to do all the work but i can’t focus on the page longer than a minute without getting distracted. i have everything shut off, also. i’m really considering finding out about ADD at this point.
