What is it about math that is hard for you? Do you struggle with any part of it in particular? Do you have trouble in other classes too, or is math your one area of trouble?

If you want to do better but you are having trouble, there are people available to help you. The first people to look to for help are your parents, but not everyone’s parents are able to help. The school probably has some resources, like a school counselor, who could help you figure out what other help is available.

If you have any friends who are also trying to do better (and are serious about it), you might be able to help each other. This is very common with older students (high school, college, and beyond), but it only works if you and your friends can stay focused while studying. It also works best if you spend your time together studying the subject and not working on homework together — for example you might make up your own questions and problems for each other to solve.

Another thought…
Don’t hate math just because you are struggling right now. I didn’t care for it until I got into high school and actually encountered teachers who were able to explain what was interesting and useful about math. Once you see the value in something it not only becomes more fun, it actually becomes easier for you to learn about it.

If you want some more interesting views of math than what most junior high teachers will give you, try looking on the web. Places like MathWorld (http://mathworld.wolfram.com/) and others have interactive views of things that they won’t teach you about in school. I am glad I stuck with math because now I work in artificial intelligence and robotics, which is almost all math and very fun.

You might not fail the whole year - but the only way to find out is to ask your teacher. (Or another teacher, doesn’t have to be the math one.)

And you might be able to get a tutor at the school to help you bring it up to a D. There’s a lot of time left until the end of the year and school’s usually do try hard to help students pass.

Good on you for trying to do something about it now when there is time to get help
