Just started driving manual.

a few questions.

The car sounds way too loud when i hit 3k rpms in first.

whenever i shift from first to second it always jerks, so im not sure im shifting right.

its fine when i shift into anything after 2nd. i wait till i hit about 2.5k rpms, shift, and let the clutch out while giving it a little gas when it falls down to 2k rpms. it usually doesnt jerk at all.

i still make it stall some of the time. at stoplights mostly… embarrassing to say the least. is this bad?

finally, when i let off the gas while in motion the car starts pulsating. it feels like im tapping the brake

Ok, 3krpms is too much, laddie, try shifting between 2krpms and 3krpms. Other then that: When using the clutch, feel for a point when your car wants to drive, then apply gas. If you get more and more used to it, it’ll come to you natural at some point.

I live in england and most of the cars here are manual. Have you had the clutch cable looked at if thats ok then its just practice really.

All very normal!! Your doing great! The fact that your paying attention to the RPM’s is good. But driving a stick also takes a bit of ‘feel.’

When the car starts to stall, its because your forgetting to put the clutch in. If the car starts acting funny and you dont know why, put the clutch in and let off the gas. Start over, dont try to correct.

Think of the clutch and gas pedals on a bicycle, when ones up, the others down!

From first gear the jerking comes from your shifting. You start off with enough gas but let the clutch out too quickly. Make that more of a smooth transition. Start by letting the clutch out slowly with little gas. Yu will feel the car moving forward, then more gas and less clutch. Like bicycle pedals. (I hope you know how to ride a bike, if not it wont make sense…. :-)

Let me know if this helps you!

The shuddering when you let off the gas is because you need to downshift. Apply the clutch and put it into the next lowest gear…so if you’re in 4th, shift to third. That should solve it.

When on hills, and you have to stop, use your handbrake and take the car out of gear.
Then, when it’s time to go, apply the clutch, put it into 1st, and slowly let off the clutch as you apply the gas. When you feel the car start to pick up, let the handbrake off. You’ll drive off normally.

As other people have said, it’s all about practice. I had trouble for the first week or so, but I was out every night practicing.
