I need medical help…

…I guess the answer is simply “go to the doctor” but I would like to know if anyone has had a similar issue or is actually a doctor that could provide some insight. I have a back problem. It usually occurs after sitting or lying down for a while or if I make an awkward twisting motion. My lower back, what feels like my spinal cord, will “lock up” and sometimes the pain is so bad it sends me down to my knees, unable to move for a few seconds until it subsides. Could it be a herniated, bulging, or ruptured disc? Or is it something else going on with my spine that someone knows specifically?

Any insight would be helpful. I’m planning on scheduling a doctor’s appointment, but I’d like to be informed prior to visiting to avoid the doctor trying to diagnose me without listening.

It’s difficult. I’m only 23 years old, male, relatively athletic. It’s starting to affect my lifestyle too, because playing basketball at the gym, lifting weights, and running is becoming more difficult. I’ve had to curb/slow down my training to run a 10 mile race because of the pain at times, although it generally happens when I’m sitting around the office or at home.

I suppose I’ll have to probably change my workout regimen to include some lower back exercises…which will be difficult considering my workouts center around upper body and leg strength due to the nature of my job (military).

it does sound like a herniated disc. how old are you? do you know much about proper body mechanics? are you familiar with concepts r/t strengthening your core?

most likely when you go to the doctor, they will want to ‘image’ your spine. meaning they will want to do a CT Scan or a MRI. These two scans allow them to look closely at the vertebrae, vasculature and disc’s between the vertebrae.

improper body mechanics and weak core muscles are the weak links which can lead to herniated & ruptured disc’s (and of course direct injury as a result of car accident and such)

My guess is likely due to injury+improper mechanics. Contact sports as well as carrying heavy things on my back as well, and for 4 years at college I slept on a less-than-suitable mattress.

Thanks for the help. I’ll make sure I get to my doctor sooner rather than later.
