school help: Any advice for the fear of loud noises? - Help.com

Any advice for the fear of loud noises?

I’ve been very scared of loud noises ever since I was young (around 5). I hate everything from the little popping noises (the ones from the small popper and crakers on 4th of July) to the loud fireworks. Anything loud or sudden scares me. Now I’m in Chemistry at school and scared of the thingswe might do. I even skipped out on a lab because out of my complete fear. Any things you guys do to help you calm down? I know we have the deep breath and my teacher does know (but has forgotten once) about this fear, but I don’t think she knows how serious it is. I don’t want to go see someone about it, but any simple advice? Thanks!

If it is really affecting your life, especially your performance in school, you might have to bite the bullet and go see somebody about it. This type of phobia can be taken care of in about 10 sessions of exposure therapy.

If you really don’t want to go see somebody about it, maybe you should try exposing yourself. I’m NOT a medical professional and I can’t technically offer any medical advice, but I know the body is not able to sustain a high level of arousal for an infinite period of time. If you, for example, put on a tape recording of loud popping noises and listen to it for a while, you will eventually calm down and become desensitized. Otherwise… I guess Dr. Awesome McCool is right… earplugs it is!

Good Luck :)

Thanks a ton! Much better advice than the friends and family who just think I’m freaking out too much.

Ear plugs I have and will cont. to try (helps at the track meets). Never really heard about the therapy… I’ll look more into it after the hoildays.

Thank you so much!!

It could work, but could also damage your eardrums if it’s too loud and often.

Talk to your teacher again about this fear. Sometimes it is really hard to convey things like this to someone who hasn’t experienced them, and having her understand will really help.

Are you in high school or college? Most schools have counseling or disability services of some kind that can help guide you to the right therapy, and may also be able to help you continue your studies in the meantime with some reasonable accommodations.

I thought about doing that with loud music. See, what’s weird is I really don’t mind the loud music too much (I can go to concerts and such). LOL! I won’t hurt my ears like that. No worries.

I’m in high school. My teacher has reminded me, once, but sometimes forget. She remembers my fear but I think she doesn’t know how scared I am. Thanks again. I think I’ll talk to someone at the office sometime before or after finals. Really helping guys! ^^
