Start by apologising!

I agree, apologizing will help. It shows that you are a person with character. Everyone of us that has had a drinking night knows how embarrassing we act. So own up to it and face the responsibility of making it right.

Ask yourself, if you were insulted, would you fire someone for it? And if they would apologize would you not forgive them and forget it? I could forgive someone if they apologized.

I am assuming that the incident did NOT take place on the job . . .

Apologize. When people get drunk, they say things they do not mean.

Secondly, tell the person you’re not going to get drunk any more, either! And you shouldn’t!

In the Army, officers were discouraged from drinking with the men they supervised. The reason. As one old artillery lieutenant colonel told me, “There are guys that will pat you on the back and tell you what a great leader you are, and there are those who will come up to you, stare you in the face, and tell you what an S.O.B. you are.”

Now, there could be legal issues involved in firing you for an incident that took place off the job, but it depends on the state and jurisdiction. An employer can let you go without even giving you a reason.

Convince your “insultee” and co-workers–and boss–that you are not a loudmouthted, ill-tempered drunk . . . and they’ll keep you on. Just watch out that you don’t do it again.
