What’s in San Francisco?

I’m going to San Francisco next week. I will be attending the ASCB meeting. I will be in San Francisco from the 12th to the 17th and I only have to attend the meeting for 16 hours, so I was wondering if there were any special events in the city scheduled for this time frame. Also, does anyone have any advice on where to shop and what to see? Are the sea lions on the beaches yet? I would love to see sea lions while I’m there. Also, how cold is it there…what should I wear?

Go to Fisherman’s Wharf… you will almost always see Sealion’s there…. they adopted the place years ago (it’s also a fun place to shop). The Palace of Fine Arts is a beautiful park, and the Exploritorium (near the Palace of Fine Arts) is a really fun place if you have a child’s imagination and curious nature.

I don’t have any specifics but there are so many things to do in “The City”. The theatre is great there. Phantom is coming back soon… not sure when. I’m sure there is lots on the web about details. The Curran and Gary theatres are wonderful. The American Conservatory Theatre (ACT) performs there have been known to pull some very famous people for their shows. You can also check Davies Hall, SF Symphony is a wonderful place for music.

You never know what the weather is like in San Francisco. You must always dress in layers. The fog is getting thick these days. But the temp rarely drops below 40 or 50 degrees. That’s even pretty cold for SF. Late night and mornings are worse and can drop to freezing but rarely much below that- so far this winter has been pretty light.

I couldn’t say much about shopping in SF. I don’t shop there often. But to me it seems the entire downtown Market Street area is dedicated to business and shopping. Also it’s easy enough to take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) in and out of the City to the suburbs. There are many shopping malls both in SF and in the surrounding suburbs.

Unfortunately the FAO Schwartz Toy Store in no longer in San Francisco :(

You’ll love San Francisco :)
Bright blessings ~ Richard

It’s not that cold in San Francisco. My dad works out there. It’s a big city, so it might be a few winds. So bring a couple of sweaters, and maybe 1 jacket. Couple pair of shorts, and a couple pair of pants. A few short sleeve shirts, and about 1 or 2 long sleeves.

Shopping, there are PLENTY of places to shop. Once u get out there you will see tons of places.

Head over to Pier 39, I’m sure it’ll be a little something going on over there.

San Francisco is a very busy city, but I’m sure you’ll love it.

During the day, the weather is okay. During the night it can be a bit chilly. And out here, the weather has been crazy, so you might want to check online for the weather in San Francisco.

Hmmm, I’ve never been to China Town actually. But my friends have gone tons of time. They tell me it’s great and have a lot of little nick nacks and things. I think you’ll like it.

lol… China town is great - truly a city within a city. What I normally do is go in to SF on the train (BART) then take a famous Cable Car to Pier 39(Fisherman’s wharf) The Cable Car goes right through China Town… it’s easy enough to jump on and off (just more expensive).

there is some walking involved in that process… but like any close knit city walking is inevitable, and not to painful if you are in reasonable condition.

You can buy things in China town you could not buy anywhere else.

Ohhhh yeah… the two Island in the bay… the FAMOUS Alcatraz Prison, and for a nice picnic Angel Island… an old military base long gone. Pier 39 is just one pier on the Fisherman’s Wharf. It is the tourist attraction (and is the one with the sea lions). But Fisherman’s Wharf is the entire street area there… lots of shopping and attractions like the Wax Museum (which is pretty good, a little creepy and fun).

Fisherman’s Wharf=Pier 39? LOL. Oh, boy…this should proove to be an interesting trip.Where’s the earthquake simulator? Is that on Pier 39 as well? I am going to be such a tourist! LOL. Oh, going out at night. Is it safe? I will have another girl with me but I can maybe get a group together at the meeting, if necessary. Have either of you heard of the ASCB (America Society for Cell Biology) meeting? I want to know how publisized it is so I can try to figure out how many people will be there. Last meeting was in D.C. and I here that there were nearly 10,000 people there. I’m a little nervous, I guess.

The Earthquake sim is at Fisherman’s wharf… down the street a bit from Pier 39

I love sushi and hear that San Francisco has a lot of places with great fish. I’m looking forwards to having lunch there.

and if you like chocolate… you need to look up Ghirardelli Square. While down at at the Wharf… Allioto’s is a great restaurant… but the eating in and around the Bay is soooo good for fish lovers. The Wharf is fun because the fishermen sell their fresh catches right there just like they did 100 years ago.

I love creepy and have never been to a wax museum. Definately will have to spend a day or two at Pier 39. My grandmother has been telling me about “the painted ladies” and Ash Street. Maybe I’ll stop by there as well. It’s a shame that I will only be there for 5 days. It sounds like there’s a lot to see and do.

I’ve never been to Treasure Island… it was (is?) a military base and pretty much off limits except to personnel.
