school help: I need to convince my parents to let me go to summer school. - Help.com

I need to convince my parents to let me go to summer school.

My parents are pretty against it. I want to take Chemistry so I can get into AP Biology next year. I know I can do it, because I’ve done it before (with Geometry), but they don’t want to give up family vacation time. I don’t know why they’re so upset: summer school only lasts a month, and we’re already having a family reunion AND a trip to the Bahamas (or maybe Florida) before it starts. I need to convince them that this is right for me, and I already have a few reasons, but I think if they can see advantages in taking summer school they’ll be more likely to let me go.

My reasons (not in order of importance):

1) I want to be on the same class level as my friends. It’s hard because I have some of the teachers and classes that they already took last year. It’s weird when they try to give me advice on the classes; it makes me feel inferior. Plus, I’ll have an increased chance of being in the same section as them if I take the same class (we don’t see much of each other during school).

2) Taking this course now would make room in my schedule to take other courses I’d like in my Senior year, such as a creative writing class and a web page development class.

3) The Chemistry teachers at my school are BAD. The first one is fun, but she doesn’t teach. I won’t learn anything, and that could hurt me in AP Biology if I don’t know that stuff. The second teacher is really, really hard, and I don’t think I could handle him. He’s worse than ten AP teachers combined! Challenging courses I can handle, but he’s impossible.

So, can anyone list any other good reasons or advantages of taking a summer school course? Or perhaps refer me to an online article or something?

Look into online high school classes. Your guidance counselor should have programs to choose from.

Since it’s chemistry, I think I need to be taking them at an actual school (for labs and stuff). Online courses are useful (that’s how I took geometry), but it’s not very suitable in this case. I’m not sure how this answers my question anyway…

Well it’s a backup plan if your parents say no. You pretty much have the reasons down, so if they still decline there’s not much you can do except do it online over the summer.

Actually, in their eyes an online course is worse, for the same reasons I gave.

I don’t see what reasons you gave, but OK. Like I said, there really aren’t many reasons to take summer school and you’ve listed the main ones applicable in your case. If they still won’t let you then take regular chem and self-study during the year so you’ll be at least a bit prepared for AP Bio. When you get bad teachers, it’s pretty much up to you to learn the stuff.

1st off…don’t mention your 1st reason for wanting to go to summer school. Parents do not have much tolerance when their children are choosing friends over them. Let them know that you feel that summer school would be what’s best for your life-long goals. They want you to be successful don’t they? Tell them that it will prepare you for college (you don’t get summer breaks in college). Make sure that they understand that you will still be able to go on vacation before and after the summer session. Why don’t they want you to go to summer school? Would you have to live somewhere else to attend summer school, or have they already financially made preparations for vacations in the middle of the summer time? If either one of these are the case, then there will more than likely be nothing that you can do to change their minds. Furthermore, are you sure that taking chemistry in the short summer semester would be best for you? It is 50X harder than geometry and they will be cramming a lot of information in your head in a very short amount of time. It will be easier to fail the course if you only have a month to learn everything.

Chemistry may be hard, but I know I can handle it. I. DO NOT. GIVE UP. I will study harder than I ever have. And no, there aren’t any location/money problems.

Maybe it’s just me ..but I still don’t understand why they would be against it.
Yes, I get the fact that you’re going on vacation and having a family reunion ..blah, blah.
They should jump at the chance if you’re actually *WANTING* to go. Most teens hate school.

Well, there are some things I hate about school, but I’m not a total hater. I just really feel like I need to take this course. I need to convince them somehow… and I only have half and hour or so to figure out how. I think we’re going to have a talk about it tonight. :(
