Hi, I wana be more confident in speaking (as i have
a deep unclear voice which people often have to ask me to repeat what i said) and walking confidently, but im shy and an introvert and dislike large crouds and get nervous easily.
Is there something i can do to become more confident, and improve my deep unclear voice?
like perhaps vocal exercises? yoga for postures and confidence, if so which ones?

Where were you?
You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen
Is there a local Toastmasters Club where you are? That’s a club for people who like to give speeches and want to get better at it.
I have the same issue. Im really shy in person, and im really softspoken. and i tend to look down alot (its been brought to my attention, i didnt even notice i do it)but i am working on it. Mainly i just try to get out of my shyness. Basically just try to relax… thats what i do. And try not to let crowds bother u. when im in a crowd i just pretend in the only one there..i
You need to practice with your family first. Build the crowd that listens to your speech one at a time. That’s how I built up my speech abilities with my family.
I also have a deep voice. Im not introverted, but I have found that when Im tired people dont hear me clearly. It seems the softer I speak, the lower my voice gets. The lower my voice gets, the more people acuse me of mumbling.
I know Im speaking clearly, its just that the lower frequency tones are harder for peoples ear to pick up clearly. (I also play drums and bass, same applies with my instruments.)
Hold your shoulders back (not ridiculous, just good non slouching posture and raise the volume a little. The more volume you give the more natural your bass voice will increase in frequency.
Dont do it for self consciousness, focus more on the fact that your tired of repeating yourself!
As far as vocal exercises go, Id suggest singing. It worked for me! Its very difficult for most vocal instructors to get a natural bass or second bass. They would be happy to have you. Dont sweat private lessons, go for the group vocals.
Its easy to blend when singing that low! In a group setting you wont feel that all eyes are on you.
Many different churches offer free vocal instruction as well.
What do you mean by unclear? Is it that you mumble? Do you have a condition? Is it your accent?
As for the deep bit, I wouldn’t worry about that. Men with deep voices are very sexy and this is something a lot of women will agree with.
My speech coach told me that everytime I am going to give a speech to picture everybody in the audience naked.
You know what I would do, I would learn Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream” speech and memorize it and try to say it over and over again until you know it by heart. That’s a speech that most people use to learn how to give speeches. If that speech does not inspire you to give a speech, I don’t know what will.

im not christian, but will i be able to go to church and join these classes? i do think it might help..well i reckon my voice is more unclear, and i guess i do mumble…how can i get rid of my mumble! Grrrr it’s iratating me!! and i have a london british accent…just…idk…nerves…i want to improve my voice so it is clear…it used to be fine when i was at college, but when i turned 20, i became more nervous and more judging of what other ppl wil think of me…
yeh…i try sometimes to think of them naked…i used that technique once where i worked…gave me so much more confidence when talking to girls…lol
Thank you nittlenick, i want to do something but something on the quiet side perhaps…
Karma Ameila, i do mumble, but sometimes…it is deep and clear…depends on what i eat…and thank you for telling me men’s voices r sexy! ;)
Ok in that case my best advice would be to practice when you are alone. Practice pronouncing all the words properly and speak slower. If you speak slowly, its so easy to understand. You could always practice singing too. Sing some slow mushy songs if you can, that could help too. Or try recording yourelf saying sentances. Then listen to it and figure out which words sound mumbled. Or even work with someone you trust to help you do this.
Depends on the church. Like I said, I feel the vocal instructor would just be happy to have someone fill in the rare second bass part. Its free though! Besides, there are usually some pretty hot women in those choirs! ;-)
try not to fret over it so much, the more you think about it, the more it bothers you! Dude, relax! :-)
Dude, all the advise in the world at once is only going to confuse you more. One step at a time my friend. Just one step at a time. You’ll get there.
Enjoy the ride! :-)
Not all no. Drummer/vocalist for the Eagles has never gotten over it. The bass player for Dream Theater wont even look at an audience. Barely ever looks at the camera even when he knows its for dvd. He doesnt do autographs either. He disguises himself as a roady to get back on the bus unnoticed.
There are people who even on stage front and center that never get over it. But they do find a way to work through it! One show at a time……
I prefer rubies. But payment is not necessary among friends. ;-)
I was introverted when I was young. I learned that people arent intimidating when they are laughing or smiling.
So I make them laugh! It works for me…..

Remember what I told you about picturing the audience naked?
There are many people I dont ever want to even imagine naked!!! yuk!! ;-)
I tried doing that. I remember one time I tried to picture the audience naked and there were three really hot girls in the front seats. After I pictured them naked, I had a hard time concentrating on the speech. I was sweating like a hog!
And then another time I had to give a speech at a nudist colony. Then I said to myself, “what do I do now? Picture them clothed?” I was totally confused!
Start your next presentation with a joke! Let them know your going to tell one! If some or most laugh, your clear.
Just dont tell the one about the priest and the boy…..that one never goes over well in crowds. ;-)
denial, classic brit…. (joke…)
Google the word ‘joke’
See if you can find a web site to pull a joke from. Im sure there has to be a site dedicated to medical humor.
test out the jokes on friends your comfortable with.
Ask your professor if he/she might know any you could tell. You might even explain why you are doing it in the first place.
“Doctors at a hospital in Brooklyn, New York have gone on strike. Hospital officials say they will find out what the Doctors’ demands are as soon as they can get a pharmacist over there to read the picket signs!”
I got that one from medicaljokes.com.
Its cute but by itself. You could always start by being serious and asking if anyone in the room was keeping up with the news. Then tell them you saw an interesting bit about doctors on brooklyn being on strike.
(if it starts off as a serious topic them leads them to a punchline, it should go over well.)
Like this……
Hey, before I start my presentation I was wondering if anyone here kept up with the news? I had on cnn while eating breakfast this morning when I saw something kind of odd. Apparently the doctors in a Brooklyn, N.Y. hospital have all gone on strike. Nobody knows why or what thier demands are yet, all they know is that they have to wait on the pharmacist to translate their picket signs…..
Even better!
(A picket sign would be the doctors outside holding up large signs with their grievences on them. Protesting work conditions, that sort of thing)
“Suicide risk
Following almost 200 studies of 11 anti-seizure drugs, the FDA has also warned of an increased suicide risk for any patients treated with certain anti-seizure drugs. The study of 44,000 patients found that patients whose epilepsy is treated with drugs face about twice the risk of suicidal thoughts compared to placebo-takers. Although phenytoin was not named in the study, the FDA announced that it expected the risk applied to every epilepsy drug.[9]”
Found that about this drug, theres a joke somewhere in there! “great drug to stop seizures! increases risk of suicide though…..well, back the drawing board for Dr. Blitz!” (he was the first chemist to synthesise the drug.)
IM so adding you as a friend! Try that first jooke on some class mates with the same major. Im curious how that would go over. Good luck. I have been summoned to my wifes christmas party. Im so excited! (sarcasm……)
fun? not a chance! Im only going for free booze! Oh yeah….and so my wife wont hate also….theres always that!
