My husband was laid off over the summer.

We moved to a larger city because this was our oldest sons first year of school and there were no jobs where we were.
Today, my husband has put in over 140 applications. He has had 4 interviews, all turning him down in the first ten minutes because he is over qualified.
I found a job, somehow, making $7.50 an hour.. But got 9 hours last week.
We’ve received a 3 day notice. They want to repossess my car which is too small for our family but what we could afford. The state of Florida is taking ten more days to process our food stamp application, after taking all last month. The churches are out of food and the food banks are charging.
I dont know how to make it through today, let alone tomorrow. We have pawned everything right down to our wedding rings and after buying food for our three babies, we barely have enough for a car payment.
Do we pay that and not have money for gas next week?
Why am I forced to make that decision?
Not only is Santa NOT visiting him this year, but we may not even have a crappy apartment to call home.

If your living in a bigger city then there should be a command labor. You both can go there and get some temp work, it doesn’t matter what you do its a job. who knows you could get a full time job from one of the temp jobs that you go to. Hope this helps :-)

Hey, I just saw this and thought i’d reply..

Remember, things always get better you just have to believe it. You and your family are alot stronger than you think you are and whilst i’m not in your position my mother was when I was younger(bad memories) and she didn’t have a spouse in the house.

You and your husband are resourceful people who are prepared to do whatever it takes to get through this besides, god never allows us to be under more pressure than we can deal with…

Good luck in these trying times..thats all they are.

I know what you mean about being turned down because of over qualified. I know this sounds stupid, but you need to dumb down your resume!!!! Don’t put everything you know. Read the needs of the job in question and only have those skills and maybe one or 2 extra skills. If the person that is interviewing you fells that smart they could think you could replace them when in fact you could. Hold back. It’s like playing poker. Never show on our face how good a hand you really have.

I have been told “we feel you would be board here.” “We are afraid you could take what you learn here and take it to a better company” Just stupid stuff like that.

So try what I said about the resume. Good Luck.

Catherine:)

This is good advise! I have not thought about it like that! I have the same problem with job interviews. This may be the answer on the right way to approach a job application and interview!
