Life, having no meaning at all, has individuals live to die.

What truly is the point in continuing life? Please understand my personal information to save you some time in answering my question.

In Connecticut, I graduated East Hartford High School, class of 08′, achieving the most perspective of the local schooling system. I accomplished perfect attendance for all four years, received Student of the Month for French 1 (2005), the “Outstanding Six Year Student in World Language (2008),” and the World Language Scholarship (2008). I studied Spanish 4 Honors, French 3 Honors, and my first year in Mandarin Chinese. Now, as an undergraduate linguistics psychology (ironically) major at the University of Connecticut, I studied Mandarin Chinese for my second year, along with my first year in Arabic. The person I live by is Federico Fellini. “A different language is a different vision of life.” But now, it’s just an optional quote to live by.

So here is an intelligent young man, that thinks his life has no point, is that the general message ? How can you say that after all you’ve accomplished ?

Yes, I am saying that intelligence will be wasted in the long run anyways. Ask that question to anyone successful, like Bill Gates or Oprah, and then say,”… and all that you have accomplished in life, mattered how, if the people will die eventually anyways?”

We are born and at the end we die, its a fact of life, what we do between the two is to make a life for ourselves that is as good as we can make it. That way when we die, our last words can be I enjoyed my life, and in it I made a difference. You make a difference many times over, you may not realize it at the time, but you did. You die with the knowledge that you did accomplish those things.

If you take the attitude, well whats the point in this I’m going to die anyway, you are wasting the time you’ve spent being educated, take it and run with it, make a grand future for yourself.

Warren,(and Sasha) thanks for your time and cooperation. I am trying to say that even if there IS a purpose in life, whether to change people or not, what’s the point in the end? Why enjoy it or not? The people we all help will be gone, and the time we spent on them will be wasted. Why even have “time” to use or waste? Sasha, you’re a real sweetheart, but family is part of what lead me to think this way. Oh, and money, is over rated. Money is another thing that I just think is a waste. Why bother working, getting a retirement, and ending life happy? There’s no point.

You have no way of knowing that when you do go you may take that knowledge with you and use it in some other way or even some other universe. Same with family and friends -living a full, complete life here, then moving on may lead to another existence elsewhere where the relationships today are the basis of your existence there. Of course, I’m just being philosophical, but there’s no way to be sure. Either way, living your life to it’s fullest should be it’s own reward.

Honestly, it sounds like you’re becoming a bit depressed and that maybe you need a bit of counselling?

The French writer and philosopher Albert Camus felt that life had no meaning, and (ultimately) found that belief to be very freeing and welcome. To him, it meant that we are free from the constriction of an externally imposed, and therefore tyrannical, direction for our lives. He felt that it frees us to determine our own priorities, and to enjoy the world on our own terms without fear of violating some constraint that we might never really understand anyway.

Here’s the Wikipedia entry for the book, but it doesn’t really do it justice. I recommend reading the French version if you are comfortable with that, since the subtleties of language really matter in philosophy.

Ok, so it’s human instinct to say,”Oh, he sounds sad …” I could actually talk to anyone on the phone and actually sound happy. It’s depression that has “developed a new side” to cope with things. More or less, a “new strengthened approach to over come life’s obstacles while making choices with valid perceptions.”

what is an accomplishment? what is the purpose of life?

saana…who knows…

if you live to die, then the most you can do is try to make the most of it by having fun… and if you can’t seem to do that, then go ahead and do whatever…

The point in life is to excel, and do what’s best for people around you. Learning all of those languages could take you all over the world! If you really want to find a purpose in life, maybe you should use your skills to work in 3rd world countries building schools, arrogation systems and helping the locals to fight poverty. Do something that will make a difference, not just for now, but for generations to come. Don’t think of life as being a waste, or mundane. Just use it as a chance to evolve and become the best that you can be. You are right, we are not immortal, and nothing lasts forever. But why not spend the time you have helping others to find meaning in their lives…this path could help you to find a meaning in yours.

Not being able to find any meaning in life at all is tunnel vision and a classic symptom of depression.

Life has the meanings you give it. I find purpose in my life from my children, my husband, my artwork, my job…all things worth fighting for. You have to find your own meanings for yourself. But never start thinking there are none -they are everywhere. You just have to decide to start seeing them, and applying value to them according to your own desires and goals.

Honey, Why don’t you save some money and go travelling over the summer or something and put to use all the languages you’ve learnt?
If you really feel that you aren’t helping any one why don’t you try teaching or something?
By teaching people you are helping other people acheive their own goals.
And yes eventually everyone dies but if you make a difference in people lives then you surely will have fulfilled a purpose in someone else life.
For example, my highschool french teacher encouraged me to continue doing french, I’m now living and studying in France. She helped me realise what I want to do with my life.

I agree with both of the above, try changing your mode of thinking from, “no point” to “I can” “I will” your mode of thinking is on the wrong track hon. You are worth more, and you have to go out of your way to be positive. Depression breeds depression, trust me on that one.

xPrinzeCharminx,

Although all of the advice above is good advice for improving one’s mood and alleviating depression, it sounds to me like you are having more of an intellectual and existential crisis than an emotional meltdown. If you are suffering and it is interfering with your ability to function, then take some of the other advice above. If you are looking for some deeper ideas about the meaning or purpose of life (something deeper than 42), take a look at Camus.

Taking a second look at the post, I’m not so sure that Prinze is depressed. “What’s the meaning of life” is a basic philosophical question that man has been asking for centuries. This seems to be exactly what Prinze is asking. I’ve ask pondered over this query many times myself. There is no answer and thinking about it is kind of pointless, other than feeding your own mental curiosity. One day the question becomes not “what is the meaning of life,” but rather, “What is the meaning of MY life? What will I do? What will I become?” The only way to figure that one out is to strive on in life and see what floats your way.

Sasha, a bum in the city has little money and only gets by with what he has in his pocket, and possibly, on the ground. Some bums love it and some do not enjoy any bit of it. Yes, some may even want to go to college like I am doing right now. But, they are unable to and live life to the fullest, knowing they have nothing to lose.

Oh, and depression, I have not proven a shrink to “direct me” for a more positive future. And they, have felt that they could help others by going to college..

rp, we all say, “We only live once.” Some take that into consideration, some don’t bother. What IS having fun?

viciousreality, thanks for the inspiration, even if I had thought about that on genocides in Darfur. Then, secondly, you’re right on track. Thanks for understanding. =]

Dragon Lady, you have assets to a “complete life” - I don’t.

Jamiee, J’adore France, mais .. je sais pas ..c’est la vie ..

tjwoods, I think you’re right. Thanks.

I seems to me that there are three things that are bothering you.
1) You don’t control the environment you grwo up in
2) Life is pointless
3) Death is certain

I can tell you for a fact that one of those statements is completely and utterly incorrect….
Its number 2!

Your argument is circular.
People keep giving you reasons to live, and help to inspire you.
And yet you keep finding excuses and rebuttals for every reply.

You give compliments to other users, yet you continue to put yourself down.

You are no different to anyone else.
Because each of us is special. We all have that in common.

If death is a certainty anyway… you have two choices
Enjoy life while you have it. Or enjoy misery.

The choice is yours.

Most people have had bad circumstances and things go wrong.
But somewhere along the line they made a choice to live a better life.

xPrinzeCharminx :
You say you are a Catholic, what does your religion teach you about meaning of life? I am not here to prove anything, convice or convert anyone, but I just want to share a little something about myself. I am a Christian, and love God with all my heart, and that gives me meaning of life. I never feel empty because God dwells in me:)

You see, God has created human beings in such a way to seek Him. Everyone seems to be looking for something in life, for something that will fill in the emtiness they feel inside. Not everyone admits it, but if you were to ask every person you meet, what is the meaning of their life, they will have no particular answer. Some might say, “I have goals I want to achieve” or “I live to become the rischest man in the world”. Some will say, we live only once, so make the best of it. Okay, ye, but then what?….What happend at the end? Majority of people on help.com come with the question, “what is the meaning of my life?” they feel empty and alone. Why do you think that is? Why do you think people feel empty, lonely, and pointless, alot of them talk about suicide even! Look at you, and all you have accomplished! Even you struggle with the question what all this is for.. There MUST be something that is missing in every persons life…nO?

what is your point of view on this?

You are very intelligent! wow! look at you, clearly you’re a deep thinker, and you are blessed with such intelligence, but perhaps not wisdom. i agree with here_4_u, for i am a Christian too. Satan is clearly dwelling and playing with your thoughts right now, and honey EVERYONE has to deal with Satan. It says in the Bible that God is with us if we choose to be with him, and the reason we are on this earth is because we are meant to serve God and live for him, as silly as it may sound. I truly can relate to you though, because i am a deep thinker too. It’s all a matter of controlling those certain thoughts. Perhaps it a good idea to slow down your magnificent mind and look at the beauty of the world and really appreciate the gifts you have been given. I can relate to you because i was in the exact situation as you’re in now. but then i thought, “ya know, even though i don’t understand being a human and all, God knows what he’s doing. He wants us to have a wonderful life and not stress ourselves out or worry to death, he wants us to appreciate what he’s given us and try and be a light of happiness to each other and try to cheer someone up. For even doing that is spreading the love of God.”
Try and look at your life from a different point of view, even if it’s a hard struggle. May Gad be with you xprinzecharminx and i pray that you find happiness with yourself.

hey come on, that’S not help.
I believe that everyone is different. And today’s education / social system is just trying to make people all in one shape. You just sound like all” We must grow up + success + marry + have our happiest family + leave things worth seeing + … ”

These are ordinary things to think. I guess, this boy’s been born differently.
Different people naturally have different views about the life …

Hm … i’m not sure what to say. That’s all complicated… Life’s itself very weird.

Maybe you need kinda mystical things to make you wonder + discover new things…

Anyway, people always say that, if you cant be happy, try to change with others to feel so, or you have to change your surrounding to adopt it for yourself,
if you fail, dont ever think that you FAİL, i dont think there’s any word ” Fail” in universe, Time is also somewhat unknown …

When you keep thinking all these matters, if you feel you’r feeling better, maybe you should find some very interesting + smart (at math. ) people who can make really complicated theories about the life …

They make you feel it’s worth living by seeing You stand by people like Einstein…

maybe it works … just give it a try once ;) :)

i will be here, checking for mesgs.

:)
