well i’m in high school and i’m in a gifted program where i go to college for math and science classes.

i’m research biofuel and biodiesel for my research class. i’m having trouble thinnking about how i can do an experiment that i can use to compare biofuel to regular fuelling methods. keep in mind that i’m only in high school so i cant just go out and pick up an old junker and work on it.

…does that kind of gas work on any kind of motor…like say a lawn mower? Could you test it that way…?? Do a bunch of trial runs…I mean maybe it’s not the same thing…at the very least you can see which works better for a lawn mower :D

-PS This may be one have the stupidest thing I’ve ever said, unless lawn mowers really can run on biofuel :P

haha i wouldn’t see why not. i would have to do some modifications to the engine because biofuel has to be heated before it can be used. biofuel is a gel when it’s cold or slightly chilled so it has to be heated so it can flow through pipes in the system. i like the lawn mower idea because it should work (if cars and lawn mowers use the same gas, i dont see why it wouldnt) and the irony of having a lawn mower that runs off of the stuff that it cuts. lol

you could use a bomb calorimeter which measures the amount of energy given off by the complete combustion of the biofuel

You could always show the differance in the way they are made, and the amount of exaust they spew, but i’m with whoever said use a lawnmower, that was a good idea.

Enter “Biofuel comparisons” or “Biofuel testing” in your browser bar and reaserch the test results of other biofuel projects and see if you can pick up on a way to make your demonstration. record information on comparisons between fuels. If you can not afford to use an actual motor, you can make charts and paragraphs, photos, and references to make your presentation work. If you understand the theory behind it, you should be able to make your point in class.

You also have to remember that most lawn mowers are 2 cycle engines that use premix! This means that the biofuel may react differently in a 2 stroke engine than in a car where the oil is separate.
