hi guys i’d be very greatful if you could help me with an essay for english :D

The essay question is ‘Explain why Carol Ann Duffy’s use of characters from fiction and history are effective in her poems.’

i’ve just no idea what to put, I don’t really know how they’re effective.
For the essay we have to cover the social and historic content, language and poetic techniques. The poems i’m going to concentrate on are ‘Havisham’, ‘Anne Hathaway’ and ‘Salome’

So anyone have any ideas as to why Duffy’s characters in those poems are effective?

I know one reason why using the character of miss havisham was effective, it’s because alot of people would already be aquainted with her character from ‘Great Expectations’ however in ‘Havisham’ she is given a voice of her own so that she can tell her side of the story rather than having to rely on other characters perceptions of her.

I hope that made sense, should get you started anyway?

Think about how the characters she uses are characters we might know/meet in our lives today.

Miss Haverham, for example… driven mad by depression, refusing to give up on the past, still madly in love but so madly that she would kill him if she saw him again…

Anne Hathaway.. always in the background of her husband’s fame. Was she the one he wrote for? Or was she just hoping that she was… who did Shakespeare give his BEST bed to if she only got the second best? Hmm….is she deluded in love? Or was their love true? He wrote for a living. But she seems to believe his words were just for her. Is she kidding herself? He was known to have a number of mistresses!

What do the poems say about how women think and act or about feminism today? Do men control women with emotions still?

Why to you think the poet chose these characters? What do her poems say about modern life and modern love? Look on help.com and you’ll find Miss Havershams and Anne Hathaways everywhere!
