The panic has set in…

.

I’m taking a 6 month course in Journalism, it includes shorthand, politics, law and writing. Problem is, I don’t think its for me anymore, and I’ve had a bad spout of heath problems and had some time off and have fallen behind, which is dangerous as it is a very intensive course, we do about 6 hours of solid learning a day, 5 days a week.

I don’t want to fail as my parents paid £2000 for the course, and I’d feel like I was letting them down, its also a waste of 6 months!

I’ve already missed my shorthand exam (well, one of them) and I have my politics exam tomorrow, I’ve been trying to revise, but there is so much to learn and I’m starting to get panicked! I just feel like bailing out :( So, any words of encouragement would be great!

Yeah, it was my decision to go and be a journalist, but its just like blaaaaah now! I’m one of those people who is average at a lot of stuff, but not really brilliant at anything. I love to paint, but where as my stuff is good, its not brilliant or amazing, not good enough to make a career out of :( I donno, I’m just sick of being average! And I get board of stuff easily, and I’m scared I’m bored of journalism now! but I can’t spend my life doing nothing, I really want to settle down so to speak!

Well if you want all that, couldn’t this be seen as a start for you to have a good life, Id say once you become a journalist it can be pretty exciting couldn’t it ?Give yourself some credit hon, you can do whatever you want to, but if you go at it with a negative approach, then all will fail, go at it with the thought that “yes I can do this” and later you may just make a good life out of it :-)

lol yeah I’m a brit! I say it all the time…well, when I’m feeling lazy, like now!

I am a bit worried about telling my mum and dad, but I’m more worried about being back to ‘what am I going to do with my life’ again :P I’m sure it’ll work itself out..maybe I’ll become a firefighter or something random! That would be fun!

Liv_192,
After 5 decades of seeing the news in print and otherwise, I can surely feel your plight. Because nowadays, even if you’re the best of the best in the field you’re now reluctantly studying, you won’t be able to write the true news, the unedited versions, the guts of the matter in truth and exposure, and isn’t THAT what good journalism is really about. Maybe you’ve looked hard and deep into what the industry has actually become - a feel-good, watered down, offend no readers, be politically correct in all phrase and presentation - and you don’t want that for yourself. If you’re seeking TRUE journalism, it has expired for lack of interest in the pursuit of truth, by the readers. And it’s really okay if you feel that way, because anyone with genuine integrity SHOULD when they see what’s going on all around us. All we get it the icing, the spoon-fed and filtered milk of the issues, whether meaningful or mundane. Maybe think about copy writing as an alternative…? And about the concern for your folks, contrary to what many will say, this isn’t a dress rehearsal and whose life is it anyway. Go to them in a moment of confidence and tell them what you’ve decided. What’s the worst they could do - cancel their financial support. And if THAT happens, you learn several things, which I’m sure you can sort out by yourself. It is amazing how much more focused we become when we’re paying the way ourselves, and how much more free we can become by doing so. Think on it, and then talk to your folks.
