yes and no it does end but the universe is redshifting that means it is growing fatser and faster with each passing moment u could never reach the end well unless u were God but thats a different story so yes it ends but it also does not end ok

forever is just a word to describe something humans will never understand ^_^ lol
no such thing as forever or infinity :P
our minds are too bounded so we need such words to try to grasp the reality of this world , with all of our dictionary , our words always fall short…

if we ever got that close to the event horizon, we probably wouldn’t like the outcome. The Universe is expanding and contracting, I’d hate to be anywhere near the edge when it contracts.

No one has ever proven that Outer Space has an end, side, or corner, therefore it is assumed to “go on forever.” Kinda like Pi.

i wonder if our technology will evolve quickly enough for us to travel thru space easily before we use up all of our resources here. i cant wrap my mind around the idea that space might be endless. my mind wants to think that there is always a beginning and end to everything.

Traveling to the outer rims of the universe, could, at best be done via instant speed. Either way it will take us billions of years to get there (With the maximum speed). Space expands.

Fact is, we don’t know. We are hopeing to look beyond the big bang edge somewhere soon, but the entire big bang itself is somewhat questioned.

So, is there an end? Factually I don’t really care. It is not in our reach, it is meire speculation. But if the big bang is indeed correct, then there is an end to the universe. An actual end to space. Namely roughly 13,4 billion lightyears away.

This is one of the questions that usually sparks more debate!
I’m surprised you don’t have a lot more argument going on in this post.

The thing is this.
Science has not proven conclusively that the big bang theory is correct.
And it seems to keep getting revised every so often, when technology advances and we can see deeper into space.

There are things in science that support the theory, and it is probably the most popular.

The answer is this.
We don’t know conclusively one way of the other.

Unless you understand the writings of people like Stephen Hawking, then you are going to have trouble really understanding the sorts of theories that give the universe an origin, and space a destiny…

The biggest question in the theory is why did something that was infinitely stable, for no apparent reason become unstable?

That’s when the theorists start to waver in the ideas and the theories start to diverge considerably.

Some say God, some say an external influence etc…

It brings up more questions… and delves into the realms of Theism, parallel universe theory, and all manner of things which have yet to be proven…

One thing is certain.
Science is far from complete.

And if we ever find the answer to such questions, the time it would probably take us to figure it out, humanity would have evolved to a point, where the answers no longer seemed relevant!

I have to completely disagree. I believe that time has no beginning nor end, and that molecules have always existed. You may ask, “how is that possible?” I counter this with “how is existance possible?”

Hehehe… ooops forgot to add my own personal vision on the subject!

If the universe is infinite, then all things must be possible…
So who knows what else exists?

I wonder if they will ever find a parallel earth!
If they did in this time in history, I can imagine the kind of governments we have now, they’d probably exploit the natural rescources for capitalist gain!

Also I would like to point out to every reply that has given an exact size to the universe… what you are referring to is the KNOWN universe.

Just wait until technology makes a few more leaps and bounds…
I’m putting my money on a discovery that makes it bigger, and older!

imagine the galaxies being on the surface of a balloon…as the balloon inflates the galaxies drift apart.the gravitational forces between then becomes less.

Where does the ‘air’ that inflates the balloon in your analogy come from?

hehehe… kinda ;)
My point was more about the unknown than anything else.
As in, there are quite possibly things in existence we haven’t even imagined as yet ;)

Therefore, one has to be careful in their definition of universe, etc ;)

If the universe is infinite, then that means we are lucky. Roger Penrose once calculated what the odds are, that this universe is created out of cheer randomness. (big bang, since we seem to be rather lucky with our constants) it is actually 1 in 10^125… this is an absurdly small number!
so technically seen the chances of existing another parallel earth is about 1 in 10^15625… Then again, the odds of finding another stable universe this old, where we can live in (different laws of nature) are probably none existend. so if there is another universe we can communicate with at all. the odds are 1 in 10^15625

no, I don’t mean that. I mean, why does the expantion of the universe accelerate? This means some force is expaning space time constantly!

ow, but don’t worry. There are probably lots of planets with conditions on which we can live. (temperature wize) and water wise. There are also very likely many planets with single cellulair life aswell. However probably only 1 in 10000 of those hold multi-cellulair life. And perhaps only one in a mullion a fauna like our own.
It is most probable, that we are the only intelligent species in our galaxy. (do note, that roughly every galaxy has 1 intelligent lifeform ;) )

AND there is the theory that WE create the universe as we know it. In ancient days, the earth WAS flat. In the conception of every walking human being, the earth had an edge that people would just fall off. That was a very real perspective. Well… when people started sailing, sailing and sailing some more without ever falling off… mankind had to re-evaluate the general perspective. Much of our “science” from the 15th through the 18th century has been proven wrong. What will tomorrow answer? Only tomorrow knows for sure.

Nicely said Richard :)

Reminds me of that movie Erik the Viking!
And how at the end all the Vikings convert to Christianity, and as their belief system changes, their reality changes accordingly.

And suddenly they aren’t in Valhalla any more!
When they fall off the edge of the world, the Christian can’t see it!

Well, we do have the scientific (faustic) method. It is basicly to be omni-valid. Whether it indeed holds, is of course still the question. But to the restrainsts of the theory, it will be always valid. But mark well, the restraines of theory!

technology evolve enough to travel threw space , am sorry to dissapoint you but the fastest speed right now is the speed of light and even if we reach that we still gona travel somehow slow relative to the galaxy , but we really cant travel in the speed of light because anything that travels even near the speed of light will in turn , turn into pure energy and it will like die or not exist and sh!t like that , check ” Special Relativity ” if you are interested , i think the only reasonable way to travel is by teleportation yeah that sh!t maybe real but havent been really tested much it’s goes something like this, a machine takes an images of all your atoms in ur body and than destroys does atoms( hence you must die :P ) , than another machine takes does images of your atoms and replicates them back and hence you are resurrected :P cool sh!t ^_^… btw last time i check this was just a theory :D

There is a very interesting theory that I’m surprised hasn’t been raised yet.
It works on the basic of holography.
A holographic plate contains every part of the image in every place within the hologram.

Some have suggested that the universe (and reality itself) is like a hologram, and that the way we perceive and experience it is particular to our own species.
If the universe were constructed like a hologram, theoretically we could travel instantly through space, because all points exist simultaneously at all other points.

i think it goes on forever cause theres no end to where you can go but mostlikely theres something outside of space you know like how we on the earth havelayers of like stratosphere an so on schances are that space is extremely vast yet has another ring outside of it thats even larger
