Hey, help.com, where are people like you in the real world?
Why aren’t there compassionate, caring people in every day life? Where do you guys hide? Everyone I meet on the street seems to be either a jerk or has some serious hangups. It’s almost like there are prerequisites for people to accept you. Everyone seems to have this wall up. Maybe it’s just the heartless city or am I on to something? Has anyone else ever felt like you don’t fit in in the real world?

I feel like I dont fit in in the real world :( Thats why I stay in my room with my boyfriend and my dog and am on help.com everyday :D
Are you really who you say you are?

Does it seem like that or does no one really care?
Well, I’m a jerk too sometimes. In real life I don’t always have time to reflect and compose my thoughts the way I do here, and I don’t get to choose which problems I have to deal with.

It’s harder to be open with people in real life. I’m really open to you guys on the net, but I have huge walls up IRL… And a moat around the walls… Shark-infested moat.

Only in real life? lol
I am just as nice in real life. But I know that there are many people who are not. And, in real life, I’m kinda shy…so it takes me awhile to get to know people.
Additionally, I think society today has changed to the point of people not interacting as much….people don’t take cookies to the new neighbor anymore….people don’t have neighborhood get togethers anymore…families are split apart…families live far apart from each other….etc.
Soooo, I know that Cory Booker IS a mayor, but are you and he the same? Or are you just using his name/pic for an avatar?
If you really ARE a mayor, I would imagine that you are surrounded by people who are cynical….

I know some people are shy so when I meet people I try to say something really silly to break the ice. I’m a big kid at heart anyway. It seems like a lot of people never really loosen up. I find people are really wound up tight.

I am in fact surrounded by cynical people. I don’t mind though I just want to get to know people.
Weeeelll, I’m not shy after 10 minutes…
And funny people are great to get to know…I’m not good with jokes, but I love to hear them; and I love to laugh.
I’m surrounded by cynical people as well…the world is full of them :( They just need love and acceptance!!! LOL!! :)
The truth about those we meet during our day is that most are just swiming the stream just as we are. Struggling to make it to the same point we’re hoping to get to though most are focused on self and ingnore the rest some are more connected such as the ones on this site.
Here’s a verse that says a bit about it..
SWIM
you’re a stranger
lost in thought
i see you
through your window
we sit at the light
i wonder about you
and the others too
i smile and nod
you ignore it
we drive on
these flailing souls
trying hard to get somewhere fast
like salmon
rushing upstream in the river of their lives
we can’t hear
the million questions in the minds of each
we can’t see
the feelings stamped on their heart
we’ve no clue
what it’s like to be them
then i realize
we are them
they are us
synchronicity makes the connection
am i different
from the other fish in the river
i am created in the same fashion
i crave the same things
the needs
the wants are the same
smiles go unnoticed
gentleness is overlooked
manners dismissed
the race goes on
as all eyes turn away
focused on the stream..
Everybody read Illusions by Richard Bach.
Nope, was it good?
That wasn’t a question.
It was a statement ;)
As in… go, go read this book now! NOW!
hehehehe
Yes, it is one of the most brilliant and simple books ever written, and it made the author millions. Not that he cared about the millions.
There is parable that mirrors what you’ve just said.
And it talks about these creatures on the bottom of a riverbed.
They cling because they are afraid.
One day one of them lets go.
The current lifts him, and smashes him against the rocks and he gets tumbled about… but eventually he gets clear to the top…
And some other creatures downstream see him… and say… behold a creature likes us, yet he flies ;)
Barely that was great. I really enjoyed it. It spoke of exactly the point I was trying to make.

Sometimes, I think we are all the bad guys.
depends what u consider to b “real”….
I am who I appear to be, but in life I wonder about other people so I keep my guard up. I have met a lot of really good people though. Its all a circle, to meet nice people you have to trust and they have to trust you, but some people break that trust and everybody puts their guard up again. On help.com most people have found this site when they are feeling lost or desperate so they have their guard down and people are genuinely here to help so they are trusting.
That made no sense but I know what I meant!!
I’m just as nice in real life! But, yea, I do act like a jerk sometimes. I guess we all have bad days occassionally.
Like others said, people often find it easier to open up on the web rather than person to person. Especially on this site, because its a “help” site. Also people can but on a nice front online and you don’t always notice their flat spots until you deal with them in real life.

I’m less bold and confident on the internet because I really don’t know who I might be talking to. They could be anyone, really, so I’m a bit more careful in general, but under the influence of extended conversation I can actually get more careless than usual and then I distance myself from it all.
