In the words of Monty Python; “… and now for something completely different!” :) Merry Christmas and Boxing day?
Hi Richard, Boxing day is a uniquely British thing:
Boxing Day, December 26th, is a public holiday in the United Kingdom, Australia (excluding South Australia), Canada, New Zealand and countries in the Commonwealth of Nations with a mainly Christian population. It is based on the tradition of giving gifts to the less fortunate members of society. Contemporary Boxing Day in many countries is now a “shopping holiday” associated with after-Christmas sales.
This day is historically England’s name for **** Stephen’s Day - ****. Stephen was one of the first Christian martyrs, being stoned to death in Jerusalem around A.D. 34-35 - the 26th December, which is a public holiday in most countries in Europe and many countries around the world with predominantly Christian populations. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, **** Stephen’s Day is celebrated on the 27th of December, although in Greece the Greek Boxing Day (Synaxis Theotokou, Σύναξις Θεοτόκου) is also celebrated as a public holiday on the 26th of December and is not related to the English version.[citation needed]
In Ireland the Bank Holidays Act 1871 established the feast day of ****. Stephen’s Day as a non-moveable public holiday on December the 26th, although since partition the name “Boxing Day” is used by the authorities in Northern Ireland and it has become a moveable public holiday in line with the rest of the UK. The Banking and Financial Dealings Act of 1971 established “Boxing Day” as a public holiday in Scotland. In the Australian state of South Australia, December the 26th is a public holiday known as Proclamation Day.
It is usually celebrated on the 26th of December, the day after Christmas Day[1][2]; however, unlike **** Stephen’s Day, Boxing Day is not always on the 26th of December, its associated public holiday can be moved to the next weekday if the 26th of December is a Saturday or Sunday. The movement of Boxing Day varies between countries.

Stay a while. There used to be a feature where users who have existed for more than x amount of time had upgraded privileges. Maybe the feature became broken with the recent work they’ve done on the site, but I imagine if it is it will be restored in short order.

For those of you that are confused, Mas, the best mod ever (yes I’m, pished, but the sentiment still stands) has sorted out the mod issue here so the word ’s a int’ is now allowed, thanks mas.

Naughty, I for one am glad it can now be screamed :)
‘Pished’ is the Scottish way of pronouncing ‘pissed’. It is much softer and I like it. I picked up the way of saying it when I visited Ayr where they say it, and have used it ever since.

im watching the black adder xmas carol :) who needs to be well to enjoy xmas?
Santa bless Television :)
Merry xmas Anubis,
What i want to know is is this a good thing, cos on the run up to xmas i went into Riverisland in Ayr an found they didn’t have a sale on while otha shops did, is this gd or bad?
Been bad luck to the otha shops like Woolies an Zavvie etc an all the people who worked in them bad time o year to lose there jobs was it not. The next lot of shops i think might go or later on next year will prob be the Sports shops like JJB an Sportsdirect, (they better not crackin gd shops especialy JJB get ma Gers stuff in there). What is suprising tho is no matter the trouble with money being short, hardly any fitbaw fans have stopped going to games weird ain’t it you would of thought “Time in need of money gotta stop with the season tickets etc” but no they are still going strong.
Happy Christmas WATP. Well Zavvi and Wlloworths gone now, and many more to follow no doubt. But football fans still seems to find the money to attend games - amazing. But we are just at the start of the recession, so maybe that will change.
As for River Island - maybe they have had good sales and didn’t feel the need to have a sale. Maybe it’s a good thing for them (and their employees) but not so good for you!
Merry Christmas Anubis,
I have been away, helping my son for ACT’s SAT’s for college. Gosh Im getting smart! LOL
May you have a lovely Christmas and wonderful New Year, before you. My sons and I rounded up some very needed jackets and clothes to help the needy. We took 2 weeks and went all over town and collected. It was so nice to see people pitch in. Dropped them off at churches, and mental help facilities. This is such tough times for so many.
We are having severe whether here, we have had many avalanches and lost 2 snowmobilers yesterday, and just last week, an in bounds run slid and took the life of a young woman.
Both of my sons are having birthdays!! Went into labor on Christmas Eve with both, 6 years apart!!! How on earth did that happen??? Sooooo, Im off to check the roast and finish decorating 2 birthday cakes!!! Oh what fun it is to……
The fun of Christmas, what would we do on Christmas day night. If we couldn’t queu outside or favourite store, waiting to get the best bargain ever, on Boxing day morning.
There are queues of people everwhere, all wishing they had got there first. There is only one that is in the very front of every one else. Oh what fun it is to……
Technically a recession only occurs after two consecutive quarters of negative growth!
every year is a terrible year for at least someone
I’ve had a really crummy festive season, it’s just been one horrid thing after another. I think I’m hardened now though, so at least that’s a good thing.

Happy Christmas to everyone. Sorry it’s a bit late. I hope you all had a pleasant Christmas and that the new year goes really well for you. I will admit that this year hasn’t gone smoothly and a few bad things have happened. However, being an optimistic person, I always try to find the good in most things.
Thanks for the lovely post, Anubis. :)
it’s nice thing what you said about family and people that are here, though i have been here for only two days i saw how people gather here to help each other which i wasn’t expected. So happy holiday :)
Hi Anubis:) Merry late Christmas and a good right hook back at ya:)!
I could not log onto help all day Christmas. The site was down:( (What a day for help.com to not be available). Thanks for the post, I’m glad it’s Sunday, I feel like the weight of the world is off my shoulders:)
It was such a shame the site was down on Christmas day. I logged on after all my guests went home deliberately to see if I could help anyone, as there are always people who become very desperate and lonely at this time of year. But also understandable that it couldn’t be run due to the holidays, after all everyone including the admin and especially the mods deserve a break.
worst job of the year:
someone who works for the markets.
everyone else is fine.

Whoops. Forgot one. Auto assembly line worker for GM/Ford/Chrysler.
Or a shop assistant in Woolworths….hmmmm
Woolworths? I’ve got it now. Anything to do with cars and stocks is bad. Thanks!
We have Woolworths shops here, and they went under this Christmas putting thousands of shop assistants out of work.

Ayr is a lovely town on the West Coast of Scotland. I got all of my Christmas presents from shops there. I’d like to go back to Ayr and share a drink or two with my friends, there appear to be a lot of parties in Ayr.

It has been a terrible year
for many people.
I see so many posts asking for money, especially as the divide between the rich and poor gets worse. The ‘credit crunch’ gets worse. (I hate that phrase, it’s like they are frightened of the words recession or depression. Credit crunch sounds ’softer’, but the effects are the same. People losing their jobs and homes.) I sympathise, I really do.
And so many people alone at Christmas, when you should be with your friends and family. But you can find help and friendship here. And, at the risk of cliche, that’s what christmas is truly about - people helping each other, listening to each other, coming together and doing what they can to make life, even in a terrible world, more livable. Drawing chairs close to the fire in the chill of winter, acknowledging each others’ presence and confirming the worth of life simply by being there.
On a christmas day when the TV schedules are full of adverts tempting people to blow away money on boxing day sales that start before the sun’s even came up on December 26th, it’s good to know that this site is here for those who don’t fit in with the manic, grinning happiness the consumerist media expect us all to embody at this time of year. I think I did my bit today, for those that needed it. (Long story, don’t ask!)
Finally, can I say a Happy Christmas Day to you all, and hopefully, in these difficult times, a very prosperous New year.
