memory help: My RAM resources diminish the longer I use programs (especially Internet Explorer) in Windows 98SE. - Help.com

My RAM resources diminish the longer I use programs (especially Internet Explorer) in Windows 98SE.

I have been running the resource meter. I close IE and other program windows, and, gradually, over the course of the day, the max system resources available diminishes.

Is there some way to clear out program remnants in memory without doing a reboot?

To start with make sure that you dont have a lot of programs that start up automaticly. The next thing is to try and max out your memory not sure how much you have. Then make more of the Virtual memory available set it to the max allowed. Now these steps should help with making your pc a little faster. You also need to clean it out. try these programs.

If your PC seems like its slowing down and having a hard time surfing the web or just doesn’t seem right. If you think that you have a virus or bug. You need to clean it out first to find out what’s causing the problems. Here’s a few programs that I use regularly and they take very little time and skill to run.
You should go to http://download.com and get these programs.
AD WARE AND SPY WARE REMOVERS:
AD-Aware: http://www.download.com/3120-20_4.htm…
Spybot search and destroy: http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search…
CCleaner: http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000…
If you don’t have an Antivirus program you can use.
Avast: http://www.download.com/Avast-Home-Ed…
or AVG: http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Viru…
and for your firewall a good program is
Zone Alarm: http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm-Fir…
Install these programs and run them regularly. This will keep your system clean and running properly. These programs are free and Download.com is a part of CNET (the site that your posting on right now). Hope this helps :-)

Memory leaks are common. They occur when a program uses memory but then never frees it once it is done. If it does this repeatedly, it will slowly use up more and more of your memory until it is terminated. The best thing you can do is try to identify the source of the leak and then restart that program to free up the leaked memory. Unfortunately, there is not a simple way to do this, and if it is a driver or OS component that is leaking memory you will need to reboot anyway.

The programs suggested by The Clue above are all good but not all of them work on Win98SE, and the ones that do take up a lot of memory.
