Does the high altitude in Denver effect your weight?

I moved to Denver, Colorado a year ago and since doing so ive lost at least 10-15 pounds. This may seem good to some but I have always been low in weight so this makes me concerned. I normally weighed 115 at my highest to 108 as my very lowest. Im 5′3 and now I weight usually between 95 and 100 pounds! I eat well with good healthy and fattening foods. Im just concerned because the weight is so low. I’m not sure whats causing it. I thought it may be the high altitude? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

It might be. I mean this is a stab in the dark but does it not take more energy to get around in high altitudes due to the thin air. That might have something to so with it. Correct me if I’m wrong though.

It takes much more energy to live up here than some other places I’ve lived. The lack of oxygen and the cold are the biggest factors, not specifically altitude, as far as I know. If you go to a nutrition store you can see products specifically for weight gain.

I agree with Michael. However factors like change in diet (chicken with less hormones for instance) And more intensifief life pattern. can affect too. Though I think the cold is the biggest factor.

Altitude affects appetite and many people find that they may not feel as hungry at altitude. There may be a slight increase in basal metabolism as the body works a bit harder to get oxygen out of the air. The exact mechanism is still poorly understood, but the fact is that many people loose weight when they stay at altitude for prolonged periods of time. This may be beneficial for those who are overweight. This Institute for Altitude Medicine is dedicated to this and other health related issues at altitude. Visit www.altitudemedicine.org for more information on how the altitude affects the body.
