What is the best Linux OS for an older computer?

I have an older compter (Windows 95) that I don’t want to just add to the landfill. A friend suggested a Linux OS, (which works better on older systems) but there are so many that I don’t know which to choose. All I want is to surf the internet (maybe with firefox) and use IM. What’s the best?

Any linux distro should do, really. What’s the system specs? Each linux distrobution has different aspects. For example, Fedora core is a widely used, easy to setup, and fairly light — but if the system is even older, you may need to use a leaner distro like Gentoo, which while significantly more difficult to install, will allow you to use much “lighter” system elements.
