I’m 28 and haven’t completed college.

i’ve just been working a steady job for almost 6 years. i realized recently what i want to do with my life and realized why it is so important to earn a college degree. I have gained an eagerness to learn something that will help others and i would like to go to school full time, but my family and friends worry about the financial hardship that will create. what can i do to attend college full time, without having to worry about how i will support myself?

things to consider:
- i live in fl and would like to go to school in nyc (preferably columbia) and have just began reviewing schools i would like to attend. i have no idea what my gpa looks like.
- i have family nearby, but they do not aways seem supportive and i do not expect financial support from them, especially at my age.
- although i dropped out of college, i still educate myself as much as i can and read books about linguistics and psychology.
- i sincerely feel i have the brain capacity to buckle down and study with the best.
- i am unmarried without children.

how can i get accepted to columbia and earn money for school?

please feel free to answer any of those questions :)

You are in a difficult position, but it could be worse. You have the capacity and the desire to study, which is excellent, and you don’t have any dependents.
New York is an expensive place to live, and there are a number of things which people do to survive college life by working part time.
Its good that you have an interest in your studies, in fact, it might be worth cultivating this interest until you’re sure you’re ready to pass the college time sucessfully.

Don’t hold on too long, i.e. don’t hesitiate forever, but do look before you leap, and make sure you’re absolutely prepared.

Get a copy of What Color Is Your Parachute? Spend your time educating yourself by finding out what different jobs are like in the areas you are interested in. Do job shadowing. Spend days with people who do the work. Help them out. Get a real sense of it. Then find out your options for becoming like that person. Don’t just choose a school in NYC and set your hopes on it.
