It’s a lambda and it’s used for the decay constant when calculating half-life.

The real question is, why do people call is “Half-Life two” when it’s clearly supposed to be “Half-Life to the Second power?”

It’s a Lambda. Other than being the 11th letter in the Greek alphebet, it is the symbol used for wavelength, also for the scientific term “Half-life” which is the period of time it takes for a substance undergoing decay to decrease by half. The game is named Half-life, so its common sense to have a Lambda as its symbol. :)
