What is the point of a water tower?

…If it’s only to store water why do they put them so high up?

They pump water up into a water tower, so that when you turn on a faucet in your house, gravity makes the water come out. If they stored it at ground level, they would have to have a pump for every house and building in the area. This is the same reason that sewers are underground. Gravity does the work.
