Procrastination.

Ugh. Never has a word flown about my mind than this one. You see, I’ve got a bit of a problem.
I tend to push things off until later. That’s fine, but usually for me I don’t do it until late. Very late. Homework is usually what I end up putting of. Now let me explain this ‘cycle’ that I’ve been going through:

Well it starts off one day when I just don’t feel like doing homework as soon as I get home. Not a problem, really, I usually plan on starting it a few hours before bed. Unfortunately, that gets pushed farther and farther until somewhere around 12:00 AM. Usually I have about 4-5 hours of homework a night. Now that right there is bad. Especially when I need to be awake and ready to leave by 7:15. Most nights I get about 3-5 hours of sleep. Sometimes I’ll go to bed really late, like at 4-5:00. Sometimes I go to bed right then and wake up really early. (4:00 AM, usually.) And most of the time, I don’t have everything done.
So, after an extremely stressful day, I finally get out. The thought of doing homework right then just makes me want to throw up right there. Not only am I extremely tired, but also stressed out from missing homework and such. I usually repeat the same thing that night. And the one after. And over and over again. I end up bombing most tests that I get. And the worst part is - my parents expect me to get all A’s and B’s.
……………
So, yeah. I’ve tried the “Just do it” thing. It doesn’t work. I don’t know. I feel like I just have no motivation. Any advice?
And in case you’re wondering, yes. I’m procrastinating right now. At least it’s better than looking at lolcat pictures that aren’t funny and that I’ve already seen for the 30th time… >_>;

My word, you just described my entire life. Seriously, this is an exact REPLICA of my life. Down to the bedtimes, the emotions and the homework levels. Geez.

I recently started going to my local library, putting music in my ears and doing all my homework.

It works really well, and libraries can be comfortable,

Do it in intervention, something like that. If you do have intervention do the homework you have gotten until that period. See it goes like this for me:
1st peroid. Math.
2nd peroid. Gym/Study Hall/Music Appreciation… okay. Study Hall. Thats when I do my homework from yesterday, which is mainly Social Studies and Language Arts. Then I get an intervention for a good 30 minutes. If I didnt finish my work in that hour long period, I finish it in intervention. So, whatever peroid your in for study hall, do your hw for that day (day you got it, so like tuesday do ure tuesday homework in study hall then when your done do the homework you missed yesterday.) You will definetly get caught up and gain sleep.

Well, It’s good to know I’m not alone then.

And, I actually go to the library right after school to wait for an hour or two to be picked up. Yeah, I know that’s pathetic, but I just… Can’t. For some reason.

Oh, and I do use study halls in the morning to catch up on homework. But it’s nowhere near enough time.

I had a problem with this stuff too. What I did was find a place that was far away from other things I could be doing. Sometimes that meant staying after school and just finding an empty classroom to get some stuff done or going to the library. As long as you get away from things you want to do and to relax with then it should work.

Other little hints that are kinda weird, but worked occasionally are doing your homework (and tests) backwards or doing it out loud…

Yeah, I have my own car so its definitely useful.
Trust me, you are far from alone. In face, I would say you are in the majority.

The smartest people I know are the biggest procrastinators.

Another idea is to tell your parents to crack down on you, when you’re feeling bad about procrastinating, tell them to set you a bedtime, to make you do your homework when you get home from school.
You’ll regret it like crazy, but hell, it will probably help

I started a homework group. We’re all procrastinators, but this way it doesn’t feel like we’re doing homework, even when we are.

I’m a huge procrastinator so I wouldn’t be the right person to give advice. I’m in middle of doing a report that was due on Tuesday-Im supposed to be doing it and instead I’m responding to your post… Hmm maybe I am procrastinating;) good luck.

I cannot believe it. You just put out my entire life! Everything you said, I could relate to. wow, what a relief to know you’re not alone…

see, im procrastinating right now by replying to your post and its almost midnight.. i shoudve already been done with my project and im already really tired.. i shoulve just did it but i dont realise how big my project is until i actually do it,

so the advice im going to give you is read what you have to do on your way home and really think about it and calculate how long its going to take you. you should assume it will take you a long time because then when you actually do your homework you could be finished before. say about it’s going to take you 5-6 hours, and when you actually do it at first its going to be really hard to focus but then you’ll start being on a roll!

seriously, that should help and you’ll hopefully be done it about 3-4 hours.. to the max! i hope this works for you because im going to start doing that too.. i think it should work.

i give myself one week to start following that plan! ;)
