How effective is language software?

Specifically Rosette Stone. Does it work as well as they say it does? I’m looking for a foreign language that I can learn on my spare time, as a new interest. Does anyone have some recommendations other than moving into a new country?

You could look Byki http://www.byki.com/
It is free language software, that has over 70 languages available. You can try them out, if you like them, you can add more lists and even upgrade. If not, you can try a different language. I am learning Russian with it myself. Very good stuff.
