what is it called when you replace the “www” at the beginning of a website with another word?

and how does that directory relate to the directories appended to the www.site.com/ address?

Usually means it’s on a local network or is just a closed subdomain of a site.

Thanks. Is that subdomain accessible from a standard directory, when coding a relative path?

I don’t know about coding but generally it is accessible through the main site, although all subdirectories of the appendaged domain usually have to be directed from the non www site.
