Four to six weeks before the wedding is traditional, because things get so busy close to the wedding.

Also, thank you notes should go out within a week afterward — they don’t have to say much at all, just a very short note that says thanks for the fill in the blank>. Designate someone to record the gifts and who they came from during the shower, and a different member of the wedding party to help the bride (or bride and groom if it is a couple’s shower) get the thank you notes written and posted promptly. Sending them within 24-48 hours is the way to go for peace of mind — just schedule time for the bride and assitant to meet the next day and work through the notes.
