That’s a tough one. Depending on the nature of the ethical problem and the company, you may be able to use internal channels for expressing dissent. Do you think that your boss might understand your concerns, or is your boss one of the offenders? Is there a higher-up boss who might understand, or a human resources department? You might also be able to just stand your ground openly even if your boss disagrees with you. It can be surprisingly hard to fire someone, and firing someone for having a conscience would probably be grounds for a wrongful dismissal lawsuit.

The other option might be to find a way to do your job in an ethical way that still pleases your boss. This isn’t always feasible, but if you can describe your situation a little bit more we’ll try to come up with some ideas. I’ve been through many sticky situations in the workplace and I have some background in business and ethics, so we might be able to dredge up something.

tell me more about this. we talked about this a lot in my contemporary issues class and you’ve caught my interest. i mean, you should listen to your morals and your heart… but you don’t want to be homeless which is totally understandable. send us some details if you don’t mind.

That is easy two choices. Go with your conscience and be hungry or just deal with it and pay your bills. Not hard at all. Hope this helps :-)

I think there could be a lot more than two choices here. Sometimes there are ways to resolve it without having to sacrifice either conscience or job.

TJ, thank you…unfortunately the chain of command is not structured in a way that can easily report and/or address specific issues. The way the company is downsizing, it could be a layoff vs being fired (which would/could be a blessing)

Optimismiles…what kind of information would you need? I am hesitant about giving too much details only because of the company and how “trigger happy” they have been about trimming expenses. I can tell you it is a large company and I work as a cust service representative.
