I was taken to court recently for assault and unlawful restraint charges by someone i thought was a friend.
everyone that was out that night (there were 4 of us in the group) drank and nobody can tell the same story. basically my now ex-friend is saying i tried to take advantage of her in my car, she had trouble getting away, and she was injured in her escape. Problem is i didnt do it, and i had an injured hand from hitting a bar table hard when we first got to the bar and my ex was arguing with me over the phone and got me really pissed off. The judge in the original trial ruled i was guilty because me injuring my hand and then being a little ticked at my friend for questioning my ability to drive her home (even though i hadnt had a drink in 3 1/2 hrs) showed i had a chronic anger issue and that was grounds enough to prove i did it. It didnt matter that she hid her injuries from police, gave conflicting reports between the initial report and the investigator’s report, and that she couldnt even tell the same story in the courtroom. I’m poor and dont trust the government at all which means im afraid of getting a public defender bc by what i know of them they dont do much to prove your innocence they just make sure ur rights arent violated. Please help with suggestions or names of lawyers who might be able to help me given my financial situation. I live in the Cleveland, OH area.
