My old laptop died, I got a new one, but I would like to recover the information from the old hard drive.

How can I connect to the old hard drive and connect it to the USB port of my new laptop?

Depending on the type of laptop, you can sometimes use a “LAPTOP to IDE HARD DRIVE ADAPTER” to install the laptop in to a desktop or a USB HDD Extension Bay. Here check this out:

You have a few options.

1) You could try moving your old hard drive to an external hard drive enclosure with a USB connection. Make sure you get the correct size, since laptop hard drives have smaller platters that PC hard drives.

2) If you laptops are the same model, you could temporarily replace your new hard drive with your old one. Copy the data from the old drive to a CD/DVD or a network location.

3) Some laptop models have a hard drive bay that sits in the CD/DVD drive bay. You pop your old hard drive into this. Put it in the new laptop where the CD/DVD drive sits, and the computer recognizes it as another hard drive on the system. These are really cool and easy to use, but are can be expensive and they don’t have them for all computer models.
