Outlook 2003: Contacts: File As: Sorting Issue

Unlike seemingly everyone else, I prefer to file my contacts by first name, last name. It just works better for me.

Unfortunately, Outlook 2003 defaults to File As: last name, first name. When I look at Tools -> Email Accounts -> View or Change Existing Directories or address books, my software shows that first name, last name is the selected File As order. But, every new entry I put into my Contacts book defaults to last name, first name.

I’ve tried to change the selection to last name, first name, then close Outlook, re-open it, then set it back to first name, last name (and close it and open it again), but none of this has any effect.

I have many, many entries in the last name, first name order, and the only way I’ve found to change this is by manually editing each entry.

Does anyone have an idea why my Outlook is behaving this way and how to correct it?

Thank you,

Amit

type the first and last name into the same area? don’t separate them, might help? but it would also mean you wouldn’t be able to search for a last name should you need to

No dear!!!

I already have imported around 300 contacts from my Gmail account and I don’t see any way to re-arrange them other than edit each one manually. If so, instead of re-typing them I can select the *FirstName *LastName (instead the LastFirst) from the available dropdown box of “File As”. But I’m sure there’s a better way out than do them manually.
Somebody HELP ME!!!

Hi etcoste and amitadhiya,

Your easiest solution is probably to export all your contacts to an MS Excel file with all fields available. Having such a listing of your contacts you can write a simple little formula in Excel which takes the first and last names and arranges them as you would like them to be filed, obviously in the column called “file as”. After this you can import into your Outlook again (just ensure that you have deleted all contacts before doing so otherwise you are going to have double entries for all your contacts.

This should solve your problem in a quicker and less manual fashion!
