Eating help: Here is a twist, Trying to Gain Weight - Help.com

Here is a twist, Trying to Gain Weight

Instead of trying to lose weight I am trying to gain weight. I eat about 3 large meals a day and snacks inbetween. I even have that midnight snack. I am 5′ 8″ and weigh now about 108-110 lbs.

I have so much trouble gaining weight because I have a thyroid disease called hyper-hashimoto’s disease. It effects my metabolism by speeding it up and also makes me a lot colder. It seems that every single time I gain weight I lose it immidently with an additional 1 or 2 lbs.

My mom even thought about asking the doctor about weight pills so I don’t lose too much weight. One doctor even thought by looking at me that I had an eating disorder because I was so thin.

If anybody could help me with a good way to gain weight that would be great. I have tried eating pastas, bread, lots of carbs, also lowering the amount of exersice I do each.

*Also I am sorry for any spelling mistakes, I am not the best speller in the world.*

Most health food stores have a powder or mix that is specifically for gaining weight. I’m sure they could also advise you on other supplements.

The problem is I cant find any health food stores in my area, but I’ll try and find a powder or mix in the local stores. Maybe they will have it…

Another problem I have is I don’t have much money… I lost my job in October and have been looking ever since. Paying the bills, medical, food, and college expencise is quite a bit. But if it is for my health… I guess it is worth it.

Sadly most of the things we really need are usually expensive. I hope that Ebay works out for you!

Yeah, things are really goin up in price, even my medical bills are going up. But yeah, Ebay should help if I can’t find what I need in my area. The only real stores in my area are a Sam’s Club and a WalMart. Now I just need to learn how to use Ebay XD

Have you looked at either place? I know both places sell all sorts of weight “loss” supplements but since my rear is pretty big I never look for weight gain things, lol Sam’s would be cheaper if you can buy in volume.

Ebay is easy to use. If you haven’t already got an account it is free to register. You will also need a paypal account to pay for things. I strongly suggest to use paypal to pay for things. The 2 times I almost got ripped off, paypal came to the rescue and got my money back. If you need more help with either one, let me know. I buy quite a bit of stuff off Ebay.

I have looked, I just really hate shopping. I guess I just don’t really know what to look for. I usually buy posta and stuff with carbs in it.

I do have a Ebay account, my friend says someday she will show me how to use it. Its just, I never really needed to buy anything from Ebay XD.

lol, we’ll like I said, I have a disease that causes me to have a high me metabolism and it is hard to keep up with it most of the time. Especially since I am such a very active person. I like to ski, ice skate, bow, run, and so much more. But I am afraid of losing weight if I do this stuff every day..

lol, I am not really into buying stuff online, infact I just try to avoid that all together, along with going into stores and buying stuff. I try to make deals with my family so I can avoid the stores altogether. lol

I thought I had a decent metabolism until I got hurt. I have to really watch what I eat now. I can gain a pound just by looking at a cookie, lol

Try eating whole grain pastas, rices, eat whole grain breads. You want to gain weight but you want to gain the right kind of weight. Since you already have one medical problem you don’t want to add others to it by eating the wrong kinds of food.

Bananas are high in carbs, so are potatoes and corn.

I hear ya on shopping in general. But if I don’t buy the things we need then no one else here would think of it,lol

lol, yeah I usually try to get the whole grain products, but of course they cost more > and my wallet isnt that big. So I always get the whole grain bread and try to get the whole grain pasta.

I didn’t know there was whole grain rice, or I just forgot or never really looked.

Thats true about the bananas, I really should eat more of thoses.

Thanks Jules22871 for your advice ^^

You’re welcome. And there are all kinds of rice. I actually prefer the brown rice over the white and it isn’t all that much more money for it.

I have a brother that had that problem as well, he ate three times the amount of food then the rest of us and then some, eventually he started putting on weight in his thirties and he does not eat nearly as much as he use to, but I think it’s partly beer weight.

My husband has a hard time gainingg weight but his is mostly because he has a very small appetite and burns off what he does eat when he works.

A few people told me that yeast works pretty good.

I’m trying to gain too. Ensure drinks are good (try Ensure Plus - made specifically for weight gain). At most Walgreens and grocery stores (in healthy sections). CLIF bars are pretty dense. Adding LOTS of peanut butter on a sandwich!
