I smoke - and what charity are You into?
My car radio broke down and I spent some time thinking while driving…
Yes, I smoke cigarettes and that is not healthy. It is also true that we smokers pollute the local environment for other people, calling for a considerate behavior which was not previously common.
But the authorities are taking this too far! Especially since they are all hypocrites and are chasing smokers only because it is fashionable. The authorities want the tax income from it, in fact they would gladly sell heavy drugs for the money, if they had a chance to still win a following election.
So I made some calculations: I have smoked an estimated 613,200 cigarettes during more than 40 years, to a today’s value of SEK 1.5 Million (abt. USD 182,000). Yes it is stupid – I could have bought a house for cash with that amount. Almost all of the price for a pack of cigarettes in Sweden is tax, actually about USD 174,000 of the above amount!
Not only that, but they are purchased for an already taxed income in the country of the world’s highest income taxes! On top of that, my employers paid huge social walfare taxes on my income.
I am fairly healthy and never report sick (I have a broken arm but I work), but I know that my lungs may not be the best ones around. But if I die from a lung disease, that is a fairly short and comparatively cheap procedure, as compared to the health freaks which are occupying beds in the long-term medical care for decades and more, lifting pensions while costing the care.
Now, if I die ”naturally” and not directly related to my smoking, my life expectancy is still about ten years less than a non-smoker’s, years disappearing from the pension-costing end of my life.
In short, my smoking is a goldmine for the authorities, which on all practical matters position themselves as my enemies because of caring more for the institution of authority than caring for the people.
So my smoking keeps tobacco employees with work. And distributers, shops and you name it. Not only did I pay taxes as of the above, but those people and their employers all do.
My cigarette money keeps your public servants in office, your kids in school, policemen on the streets, the roads open and so on. And when it is time to cash in the pension, I die instead.
What charity are you into?
