Obama, Old Farmer’s Almanac and taxes
What has Old Farmer’s Almanac to do with Obama? Well, nothing so far, but I hope it will. Because the almanac is way smarter than previous administrations, not only of the USA but of most countries!
The almanac gives advice on a lot of matters like how to forecast the weather, when to plant and when to harvest. But it also gives advice on a lot of other things in order to enable the farmer to have a secure and pleasant life. It is written in a simple and understandable way so also less educated people can understand it. The logic is simple and based upon the experiences of countless previous generations.
Each and every farmer kid knows how ”to tax” the harvest. Not only seasons but also years are different from eachother. A less fortunate year may follow upon a year with very good harvests, and the almanac tells how to deal with that.
The logic is simple – you take away some of the excess from a good year’s harvest, store it in your barns and use it when times are less good. You will then be able to keep a fair standard of living through changing times and conditions.
Then why do governments always do the opposite? The government should be your ”barn” and is supposed to collect taxes when times are good, lessening them and distributing welfare when times are bad.
But oh no, they believe they don’t need much taxes in good times (and people can take care of themselves), so when the times get worse the government is broke and have to increase the taxes! This makes bad times become even worse times. Just imagine a stupid farmer with an empty barn, having to eat the seeds instead of planting them…
There may be some political reasons like flirting with economically powerful groups, but the main reason is a bad one:
All governments alienate themselves from their respective people, protecting the institution to the cost of the people. The cast is set by the government because they have the power, a them-and-us scenario where the Administration plays the role as ”farmer” instead of playing its role as ”the barn”. The people will thereby suffer in order to keep the government as unharmed as possible.
My message is simple: Turn around and work according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac! International and national economics are of course full of complicated relations and interactions, but the ”red thread” through it should be visible according to the above!
Because what is a country without its people? USA actually IS its people – the administration is only there to deal with matters in the interest of the people.
So this is what I am looking for when watching how Obama will deal with economical matters.
For reference:
Old Farmer’s Almanac is the oldest continuously published periodical (since 1792) in North America. It’s origin is even older, the ”modern version” from 1508 in Germany, but even an older version written in the Sumerian language from the old Mesopotamia. The Swedish version ”Bondepraktikan” was published from 1662 and was ”a must” for the emigrants to bring along to America (together with the Bible, the Luther’s Catechism and the Hymnal).
