Computer problem.
My computer turns on but after log in only shows the background picture, I have no icons or menu bar at all. I was just about to do a back up so I don’t want to have to redo the whole system. Help!

Where were you?
You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen
does the menu bar come up when you bring your mouse to the bottom?
how did you manage to bring up your internet explorer?
I am on my netbook at the moment, would be rocking in the corner if I didn’t have my internet access :)
does it just freeze on the background forever, or just a few minutes?
Forever. i have left it on for hours hoping it was struggling to load but its giving me nothing
does anything happen when you press ALT CTRL DEL together?
I think this will help you load your computer for few times till you back up follow carefully:
if i understood correctly, once you log in the whole screen is blank
simply press cntl+Alt+delete to get the taskmenu, under file you find run click on it then type “explorer.exe” your icons menu and windows should load try this and let me know
sometimes anti virus, softwares etc accidently delete boot up modules and in this case you windows modules… if you get an error saying c:/windows/system32/… faild to locate blah blah then use your original windows cd to re-save/reinstall that module else you might need to reinstall it all.
well that’s as far as my computer knowledge goes, I saw some other guy online yesterday who seemed to know lots about computers, but I forget his name
no it’s not a lost cause, because at the end of the day you still have the option to reinstall everything.
if Ctrl+Alt+Delete won’t help… try pressing the Windows Button+R
then type explorer.exe
windows and R seems to have done something as I can hear the hard drive but can still only see my background
press ESC once
then press windows button and R
type in explorer.exe (even if you can’t see it) then press enter
did anything happen?
that sounds a bit scary.. you are going to want to see if u can start up in safe mode. if it cant even do that… u havnt many options.
to do that check this out.

you restart your computer and i think hit f8… you should then get a menu and select safe mode.
Have managed to get task manager open (invisible typing worked) but it says that explorer.exe cannot be found

I’m sure your computer is alright it’s just that there is no visual output… when you press windows+R you must see an input panel that you can type in and click RUN but I guess you don’t see the panel.
why don’t you Safe Mode it I’m pretty sure your computer will work in Safe mode… like NicNash says restart then press F8 many times till you see a black screen and use the keyboard to select Safe Mode and ENTER
explorer.exe cannot be found. That’s bad. Maybe you could retype it once, to be sure that you typed it correctly?

I tried 4 times :)

should have been the first thing to do after ctrl+alt+del didn’t work.
after that we can start looking for a way to solve this.
Vyki try Safe Mode … Restart windows…. F8 many times… then Safe mode with network or without… no much a difference..
other than that, you could also google the symptoms as accurately as you can,
you’ll be surprised how many people in the world share the same errors…
and someone might have already solve this.
i’d do it myself but i don’t entirely understand what happened…
(btw is it a pc or laptop?)
I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but I think if the computer can’t find explorer.exe, there is a serious error in the windows system files. I suspect that Vyki will have to repair or reinstall windows.
Have got it into safe mode but it is just a black screen with writing round the edges :S
hey there something wrong wid this keep tryn too say hi anyway HI im gone take care eh x
reset it then restart in safe mode then go through all systems
I meant to try the steps in safe mode. I’m sorry. I should have been more specific.
then work through all the different things that cud b wrong
It still can’t find explorer but I can at least access my data so I can try and find a way to back it up.
I think I will back it up and then teach mr computer how to fly!
is it fixed?
Not fixed but enough that I can get my data onto an external hard drive I hope
If you want, you can try to do a system restore. (This keeps data, but installed applications since the restore point you choose and settings need to be reinstalled/reconfigured.)
Try typing in this in the task manager run box.
%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
I also recommend you run an antivirus scan. Then I’d say download windows defender, and scan your computer with that aswell.
It didn’t paste right.
Let me see if I can type it.
%SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
Will back up data first so I know I have got it but keep posting so I can follow it when I have done grabbing my stuff. Thanks so much, I have been really worrying
All right. Help.com is being a ***** and not displaying the characters. I’ll spell them out.
It’s as follows:
%SystemRoot%(backslash(the one above the enter key))system32(backslash)restore(backslash)rstrui.exe
i googled it a bit:
http://www.wilderssecurity.com/archiv…
look here
they say it has something to do with some antiviruses or services…
the last post there tells what services that guy shut off for it to work.
if you need help on how to shut them off just say, i’ll guide you.
i just don’t know if it would work.
Don’t type the parentheses and the words in the parentheses, but substitute in the symbol.
Restart your computer. When during the dos boot, it might say something like “boot into safe mode” or something like that. What OS are you running? Try a google search for something like “Windows XP Safe Mode”
Then if you can get it into safe mode, you may get a chance to back up your files. If you can’t get it into safe mode, the only next thing i might suggest is to stop turning it on: it may cause more damage if you have a virus. Take it to a professional and (possibly call around) ask if they have data recovery services.
