hm. I partially agree. I live in england and the year before last our shopping centre was not allowed to put up christmas decorations and things like that because one culture didn’t agree with it and complained basically. I’m not too bothered but it was just the principle, in england we tend to celebrate christmas, they don’t have to agree with it, thery don’t have to celebrate it either but it should be accepted just as we accept their cultures.

After, the customers leave, I get a small, little wave of remorse, but then i realize what everyone else says, “If you were in their country, they would require/expect you to know/learn their ways.”

I do try to set a “limit” with my “mean” streak because I know that i would not want to be treated so horribly if i was in their country just visiting. It is not EVERY day and EVERY customer, but it does occur often enough for me to worry about it getting out of control.

There was also some problems with people wanting to hang england flags out their windows when the football world cup was on…people complained about it. Bring down our own flags! I’m not too keen on football but i thought that was mean. But didn’t some purist type group have this flag as there sign? (white with red cross on?)

If i was in another country I’d try and love and respect their culture, it’s fair to hope the same back. However, it would be embarressing if I didn’t know the custom…someone told me that if i was in Turkey and wearing a low cut top like the one i had on at the time i would’ve been spat on. I wouldn’t have known that! but I suppose there is a difference between being a holidaymaker and actually living in another country.

That is HORRIBLE! About the Christmas decorations! I had no idea that, Europe celebrated Christmas the way they do! LoL! I do not know why, but I just never thought that people in Europe celebrated or made too big a deal of Christmas. After I saw the movie Love Actually and The Holiday, I thought it was so cute how people in Europe celebrate Christmas! I also watch, this past Christmas, Rick Steve’s European Christmas. I curled up with a cup of coffee and some homemade date-n-nut bread that mom makes from the holidays and was watching it, but the network (WTTW) cut off the program and the channel was black for a good three minutes and aired the Faith Hill Holiday Music Program ealier than sceduled and filled in the gap at the end with some whale documentary. (Rolls eyes) That is a shame that you could not decorate the mall!

I mean sure.. it’s difficult, but chill out. When I used to be a waitress, I had to deal with tons of people who only spoke Spanish, all the time. Sometimes it was confusing - yes .. but I also thought it was pretty neat.

Don’t hate people just because they aren’t the same as you. Now, I’m not saying you’re completely wrong .. but I DO think you’re overreacting.

I do agree that they should try and learn a least a few things in English, so that it would be easier .. but sometimes it can be hard for people.

I took Spanish in BOTH middle school and HS, and I still can’t catch on. I only know the basics like numbers/colors/months/short phrases ..etc.

I am even MORE annyoed at the fact that just across the street, a Mexican store has been built!

I don’t understand why that would upset you?
We have grocery stores here that only sell mexican food, certain gas stations that serve mostly mexican things (spices, chips, etc) ..It doesn’t bother me any.

So, I’m sure it might be a little confusing/frustrating .. but take a chill pill. Smile, try and help them, and **** it, BE POLITE. Just because they may not understand you doesn’t mean they aren’t human.

Well we both speak english don’t we :P I’m kidding. No we do celebrate it, well we celebrate santa claus and the giving of gifts mostly! Well it’s always nice to see the lights and Santa’s grotto especially for the kids…and it’s sad to have people not wanting us to do that.

I do enjoy having lots of different cultures around. I’d love to learn another language and to visit everywhere, but at the same time I think I like the fact that these cultures are seperate so why do we have to bend to fit their needs…I like people and places being different…but perhaps in a thousand years we will all be one race…

I mean…I am Armenian and there is like NO WHERE or me to learn about my culture. Where there is, its ALREADY WRITTEN in Armenian. Most days I don’t let any of it bother me, but today is just one of those days where I am on “full” with the babying and holding hand of catering to the spanish speaking.

Uhhh! Don’t mind me I guess. It is just a “temporary” rant. I have ranted and raved about MANY different things today, but I just wanted to know how others feel about it and acting this way towards others. One of the girls I work with IS spanish and english speaking and she complains to me ALL the time how she HATES when customers walk up to her and just start speaking spanish to her. One of the front end managers for the service desk speaks both english and spanish and he complains to me too about them approaching him and doing the same. So, its not like I was looking for comments from just a specific group of people.
