New Admin
Everyone I’d like to introduce a new admin:
http://help.com/user/294044-helpmod
There will be a brief transition phase during which the new admin will get up to speed — but going forward he will be the only admin.

Where were you?
You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen

Before you transition can you fix the avatars?
Avatars are fixed and have been for a while.
Why only 1 admin, that makes no sense…
So you’re out?
Hi All. I’m the new admin. Let me know if you have any ideas of how we can refocus Help.com. Changes will probably have to happen. We have very limited technical resources.
Probably a suggestion, but maybe you should get yourself an official-looking avatar, instead of the generic letter, H. Make yourself distinct from everyone else.

Find me a good one and I might use it. This site is about Help, so please help.
Can we please please please fix the notices???
Oh my
Yes, first on the list fix the notices and then mass ban

I can only help so much and I’m taking off, thanks for the offer though.
Yes those notices not coming in, need to be fixed! Definitely a priority. People are leaving the website because it’s just not as dynamic as it used to be mainly because of that.
Welcome to you, Helpmod! :)

One suggestion that would help is to have a channel of communication for admins and mods getting messages out to the user community. Many people won’t see this post, or won’t see it right away. An announcements page or some similar means of communicating plans and changes would be greatly appreciated by the loyal user community.
Farewell, Yourabi.
Welcome, new admin. :) Be careful, a few people here bite…guess which ones.

We have extremely limited technical resources. If you can figure out a way to do this easily, I am open. I honestly think its too hard to implement though. We do have a mod forum though, so hopefully I can get some good mods to work with.

Welcome Helpbot. My avatar STILL doesn’t work, it doesn’t stop me helping but makes me feel very unnoticed. What can I do to get it back?

A web page with announcements doesn’t require much code. You don’t need to take feedback from users on it, just provide a place for occasional news, such as the arrival of a new admin or a new moderator. Adding an announcement doesn’t have to be any more complicated than adding a line to a FAQ or revising the About Us page. Even if you don’t have a content management system, this shouldn’t require a lot of resources.
Welcome Helpmod.
Take Care Yourabi and thanks for all your hard work and persistence!
And Helpmod (Jeezzz! Do you have a name?),that color change from orange to blue is a really good idea! It’ll help keep the atmosphere a little more peaceful around here which is most definitely a good thing!
Hello Shakey! :) Hope all is well with you… :)
When you say your avatar doesn’t work what do you mean? I’ve tested it out myself and I’m able to change avatars and view history.

Yourabi said it might take a while for some peopele to see the changes like victoria sponge there.
So what still needs to be done to get the site back to normal?
notices, and the help search when you make a new post always comes up empty, other then that, things are okay here right?
As I said avatars are definitely working and has been for days.
Notices are definitely working I’m getting a ton of them for this post
I’m leaving to focus on other projects.
The only remaining issue is auto-tagging of new posts, and that is something I’m working on.
yourabi wrote:

Thank you! That will make a HUGE difference.
Hope you’re heading somewhere nice, Yourabi. Good luck in the future. :) :)

Subscription-based notices work, but people used to get notices about posts with tags that matched their profile tags.
Anyway, people don’t complain about things like that as loudly as they complain that they wish the great administrators would say something, anything, so this post in itself probably granted a lot of wishes.
There was another “HelpMod” a few months ago … http://help.com/post/195087-not-to-so… … same person?
The problem with the notices never was subscription based notices. It’s the new ones like Michael Leibman said that I really want back.
HI new admin, I hope you stick around a little longer..
Thanks yourabi for what you have done even if the stuff you have done has been unknown to the rest of us I am sure it helped in the long run.
Everyone who is still complaining re-read my comment

Right and since I said Auto Tagging was broken it would logically follow that TAG based subscriptions aren’t working either. Again, it’s not notices, it’s only auto tagging that is not working.
Steve: That’s not my call
Welcome HelpMod.
Thank you Yourabi, your efforts seen and unseen are appreciated, today, tomorrow and always!

welcome helpmod!!! you will find yourself in a new world of family… and eventually fit right in…
other things that this place needs are mods… mods from different locations all over the world.. so that they can be on at different times of the day so that this site can be monitored at all hours, every minute of every day… as the trolls have a way to get around and tend to cause a lot of mischief..
Good luck Yourabi in whatever you are going to do, I hope it all works out well for you…and good luck helpmod for having to deal with us! :)
I’m sorry to intrude
but yourabi not those notices, the ones that go on “your notices” to the right there hasn’t been any since 12/08, they say anyway
oh nevermind i “re-read”

anyway
yes

I am concerned by the line “extremely limited technical resources” - I love this place and have a bit of a coding background. There are others here with huge technical experience. IS there a way we can get on board on help? Is help needed?
Are there things like moderators? Sometimes anonymous post become edited by others. How come? How does the help.com chain of power work?
Of course there are things such as moderators…
We currently have 3 main active ones…
http://help.com/user/6117-anthrax

Moderators are distinguished by the small yellow star on their profile and replies

Welcome Helpmod. You will be the one the helpers turn to for help. I think that makes you king of the helpers. Wear your new crown proudly and in good health.

Anything > nothing.
This may be daft but is there a way we could have a FAQ section, eg for people who want to verify their friendster account, so helpers dont get annoyed and the posters dont get ignored or sarcastic comments made as we have seen the same post so many times.
Technically we all ready have an announcements feature, I have mentioned this to helpmod and I hope that the current moderators mention it to him as well.

Huh? Is it one that has never been used, or am I just dense in not recognizing it?
It’s an announcement bar thing. it’s not to big, it was used when the site pretty much crashed.
And posts about the site were linked in it.

It sounds good. I just think a place where people who care could look up site news would be useful. Any old blog software would suffice for that, if nothing bespoke were available. This site lives or dies based on its user community, and that user community needs engagement if it is going to be loyal and enthusiastic.
Have fun with your other projects, yourabi!

Biggest problem is that currently, there are no CNET staff members that are dedicated only to the this project. The last staff member that was, was Jeff and that was a long time ago. Therefore, it’s hard to provide information when there really isn’t that much going on. The mods have a seperate site to communicate on but really 99% of the discussions there are regarding misconduct between users. Until we start seeing some development on this project, there isn’t really much news to report.
And yes, the announcement bar has been called into action once or twice in the last year by myself in regards to service issues with the site.
Is there a way you can go about re-changing your user name? And lastly, is there a way I become a mod at help.com ? Someone who moderates the content/threads.

Moderators who actually want to be moderators might tend to stick around longer and perhaps even do a better job than those randomly recruited for their potential moderator aptitude.

Really? I find quite the opposite. I find that most of the users who ask to be a mod are really just doing it for the power. If we feel that your conduct and policies on the site accurately portray the ToS, we may consider you to be a mod. Asking to be a mod does none of those things.
DaNi♠HaTes♠You wrote:

We haven’t added a new mod in months. And that was only 1 mod. It was maybe a year before that when a bunch of new mods were added.

Those are the most vocal and visible ones, but a person who actually cares and wants to do a job usually does it better than those who don’t.
People could tell me I’d be a good moderator till they’re blue in the face and it doesn’t mean I’d bother doing a decent job if that’s not what I want to do.
Well I want to be a mod and not for the stupid power
lol i thought i was in the superbowl post

I wouldn’t do it just for the power, I want to do it because I think that I’d be good at it and it would be good to have a moderator in a completely different timezone from the other mods, bringing some new inspiration and ideas to the team, along with various other reasons, as I’m sure the multiple other members who want to be moderators as well.
