How to remember what other people tell you to write?

I’m in HIGH SCHOOL. so tape recorders won’t work here. I am not a bad memorizer but when it comes to dictation or writing down what people tell me to write, I can’t remember all of what they’re saying so I just sit there looking stupid and asking them a few more times to repeat a certain part of their sentence to get it all down. It’s so embarrassing and it makes me look stupid or like I have no idea what’s going on. In my AP psychology class, we had to get into groups and come up with a hypothesis for an overjustification effect experiment and I got assigned to do the writing. It doesn’t really matter what the experiment was about, but one of the guys (he’s sort of a friend) suggested that we do an experiment relating to poker. I personally do not play poker and have no idea how to play it or have any grasp of the concept so this guy tells me to write down the hypothesis and I’m trying to write it down, but I don’t really understand what he’s talking about cause he’s sort of talking to me like it’s an obvious thing to know but I have to ask him to repeat it and I start getting nervous and embarrassed. Basically, I have no idea what he’s talking about, I don’t understand his experiment, and I’m getting nervous.

We’re supposed to have written out this experiment (hypothesis, confounding variables, IV and DV, etc) i guess for monday, so I’m guessing we’re sharing these out loud in class. unfortunately, i have no idea what this experiment is about but it seems like the other guys do so I’m screwed and i’m freaking out. I decided to write out a different experiment that I actually understand and can comprehend that I’m sure other people will get (it’s a really simple scenario, just like a girl gets rewarded with money by her mom when she practices playing the piano but then she soon only plays just to get the money).

So basically, what I need help with is, should I just tell the guys that I made my own experiment to use that took literally 5 minutes to write up, and what can I do to improve my dictation skills?

Take time to research before you write down anything.
It’s always welcome to ask questions. If i know, not all of the members in your class know what the guy was talking about.

If you don’t remember and have poor memory, use post its.

I do.
