sleep help: Provigil? - Help.com

Provigil?

Has anyone taken provigil? If so can you tell me about your experiences with it? I have sleep apnea, but can’t get treatment right now because I don’t have health insurance and it’s too expensive to do all the sleep studies and get the equipment without it. I am wondering if provigil can help my extreme daytime fatigue until I can get a CPAP? Yeah, I know that it is still expensive, but it would be cheaper than doing sleep studies and getting the equipment. I will have insurance June 1, so I am looking for a temporary fix until then.

Since you have sleep apnea you should not take anything without talking to your doctor about it. I know that docs cost money but your life is a lot more valuable than the cost of an office visit. I don’t have insurance either but I go ahead and pay my $75 a month and see my doctor.

I was going to go to the doctor to talk about provigil, but I wanted to get some input from some people who have actually used it first.

I’ve never taken it but doing a little googling I found this site

http://www.rxlist.com/provigil-drug.htm

“If continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the treatment of choice for a patient, a maximal effort to treat with CPAP for an adequate period of time should be made prior to initiating PROVIGIL. If PROVIGIL is used adjunctively with CPAP, the encouragement of and periodic assessment of CPAP compliance is necessary.”

Yes, but since I can’t get on CPAP for another 4 - 6 months, would taking provigil until that time be helpful?

“General Considerations

Dosage adjustment should be considered for concomitant medications that are substrates for CYP3A4, such as triazolam and cyclosporine (See PRECAUTIONS: DRUG INTERACTIONS).

Drugs that are largely eliminated via CYP2C19 metabolism, such as diazepam, propranolol, phenytoin (also via CYP2C9) or S-mephenytoin may have prolonged elimination upon coadministration with PROVIGIL and may require dosage reduction and monitoring for toxicity.

In patients with severe hepatic impairment, the dose of PROVIGIL should be reduced to one-half of that recommended for patients with normal hepatic function (See CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY and PRECAUTIONS).

There is inadequate information to determine safety and efficacy of dosing in patients with severe renal impairment (See CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY and PRECAUTIONS).

In elderly patients, elimination of PROVIGIL and its metabolites may be reduced as a consequence of aging. Therefore, consideration should be given to the use of lower doses in this population (See CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY and PRECAUTIONS).”

From what I read on it, it is a very serious medication. Only you and your doctor can decide if you should take it. Please don’t go by what some stranger on the internet tells you. Everyone is different and just because Person A had good luck with it doesn’t mean that Person B will. I wish you the best of luck. I know what it’s like to feel tired all the time and it is horrible.

Lucky person in Britain. I got to get out of this country. I walked into my doctor looking like I was strung out on crack cause I had’nt slept for days on end. He still would’nt give me anything. He told me to just try over the counter stuff and I already had. I have insomnia. Never been diagnosed with anything cause I can’t afford the doctor) Its another one of those mornings where I won’t go to be until 9am and then wake up sometime in the evening…then the whole day and night is shot. No wonder I don’t have a life. But I think my sleeping pattern has something to do with my depression also. (It sucks when you have to diagnose yourself because you can’t afford a professional) I have’nt tried Provigil. Is it over the counter. Nothing can be bad if it’s over the counter, unless you take too much of it. Anyways, Good Luck…let us know if you tried it.
