Shows to see and avoid in Las Vegas
I go to Las Vegas a lot, so I often get asked about which shows to see and which to avoid. Here goes…
Must Sees:
Mystere (Treasure Island). The original Cirque du Soleil show in Vegas. Constantly changing depending on the performers they have available, but it’s always been worth the price. Amazing acrobatics and gymnastics show.O (Bellagio). The second Cirque show, similar idea in that it’s acrobatics and gymnastics type stuff but done around an enormous indoor pool. So a lot of the acts are aquatic in nature. Very entertaining.Blue Man Group (Venetian). I haven’t actually seen the Venetian version, I saw them way back when they were at the Luxor. But it should be generally the same thing, funny and wacky comedy routines and outrageous props. You’ve seen a tiny bit of their act in those Intel commercials.A New Day (Caesar’s). Okay this is an acquired taste, and it’s fabulously expensive, but I really enjoyed Celine Dion’s show. And if you’re taking your parents to Vegas this is probably the show they’ll insist on seeing. I thought it was worth the money to see it–a spectacle on an enormous stage.
Worth seeing if the Must Sees are sold out:
Mamma Mia (Mandalay Bay). Oh come on, who can possibly not start tapping their toes when an Abba song plays on the radio?Lance Burton (Monte Carlo). The best of the Las Vegas magic shows.Penn and Teller (Rio). The funniest of the Las Vegas magic shows.Danny Gans (Mirage). Musical impersonator–some of his impersonations were amazing.Tournament of Kings (Excalibur). One of the great family bargains on the Strip–$55 for dinner and a jousting tournament. Kids really love this, both because they get to eat with their hands and they get to watch guys hit each other with swords. That’s entertainment.Skip it:
American Superstars (Stratosphere). Lame lame lame bunch of weak-assed impersonators. None of them have talent, why would combining them all into one show make them any better?Jubilee (Bally’s). A topless revue where the real stars are the costumes. I guess that makes sense–boobies to attract the guys and jewelry/costumes to attract the ladies. But it’s just pointless–if you are there for the topless entertainment there’s much better to be had at the gentlemen’s clubs in Vegas than here. And if you’re looking for costumes, the stuff in Celine’s show is much better.Elton John: The Red Piano (Caesar’s). Disappointing. Elton just phoned it in, and he failed to take advantage of the stage (he plays on the same theater as Celine when she’s not there).Barry Manilow (Las Vegas Hilton). A show only your parents will want to see. And even they’ll be disappointed. You could see the stretch marks from all his facelifts and we were in the back half of the theater. It appears to have affected his voice, it was just kinda sad.
